The General Directorate of Civil Aviation has chaired the meeting of the Airport Coordination Committee of Aragón, where an analysis of the current situation of airports located in this community and measures to boost airport activity has been presented.
For a decade, this committee has brought together representatives of the Ministry and the main institutional actors to unite positions and share the challenges of key infrastructures for the territory.
In the course of the meeting, the current situation of the Zaragoza Airport has been analyzed and the positive data obtained over the past year have been valued. The Aragonese infrastructure recorded in 2023 about 700,000 passengers, 9.2% more than in 2022, the second best year in the history of the airport in terms of number of passengers. In terms of merchandise traffic, it has also had a very positive evolution, serving about 130,000 tons of cargo, with an increase of 2.2% compared to 2022. In this way, it consolidates its third position in the Aena network in terms of carguera installation.
In relation to the Huesca–Pyrenees Airport, it has been highlighted that during 2023 general aviation, pilot school and aeroclubs operations have been carried out, in addition to the operations of the helicopter of the mountain rescue service of the Civil Guard. The Oscense infrastructure studies the possible development of new projects and is in contact with companies in the sector for other activities.
The meeting was attended by Miguel Ángel Anía, General Director of Transport of the Government of Aragón; René Gómez, Director of the Promotion Area of Subdelegation Government in Zaragoza; as well as representatives of local entities; of economic and social organizations, and of Aena.
The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere that reflected the good harmony between all the agencies and institutions, with a clear desire for coordination to continue working for the future of the airports of Aragón.
In this regard, it should be noted that a week ago Aena approved a powerful three-year incentive plan to boost the increase in the offer in airports that had less than three million passengers in 2023, since airlines will be exempt from paying the fare per passenger of all passengers additional to those of 2023 for three consecutive years. A new plan that directly benefits the Pacense infrastructure.
Participation in airport development strategy
The Airport Coordination Committees (CCAs) allow the participation of the autonomous communities, local entities and civil society in the development strategy of the airports located in their territories.
The CCAs constitute spaces for efficient dialogue between the airport manager and the territory, safeguarding the operator’s management autonomy and within the current competitive framework. Its objective is that the airport infrastructures incorporate and anticipate the necessary demands for the economic and social progress of the communities in which they are located, and at the same time, contribute from each territory to guarantee the competitiveness of the airports and the sustainability of the airport system.
