The book, available for free in digital format on the platform ‘Discover the volcanoes’, accompanies a group of characters known as ‘the Volkis’ on a journey through volcanic phenomena, their processes and their impact on the Canary Islands, with special attention to La Palma. The objective is to bring science closer to the citizens, especially children and young people who directly experienced the impact of the eruption. In this context, dissemination is conceived not only as an educational tool, but also as a resource to accompany, understand and heal.
The presentation was conducted by the director of IES El Paso, María Elena Martín, who valued the interest and support shown by the scientific community in the affected area and on the island in general. IGN researcher Carmen López stressed that “the eruption of La Palma left scars not only physical, but also emotional, so the book has been prepared with special care, sensitivity and respect, betting on a close but rigorous language.” Meanwhile, the geoscientist of the CSIC, Adelina Jeller, made known the characters, ‘Los Volkis’, who travel from Barcelona to accompany their island friends, ‘Los Palmis’, and ask them how they lived the volcanic eruption.
“Science is a fundamental tool for moving forward, but so is closeness, empathy and the ability to listen to those who experienced the eruption. This book combines both dimensions: it explains rigorously and, at the same time, it accompanies sensitively,” said Commissioner Héctor Izquierdo. He also thanked the joint efforts of the institutions involved and stressed that initiatives such as this “reinforce the commitment to a comprehensive reconstruction”.
