- Marisol Garmendia states that “the existence of these symbols contravenes the Democratic Memory Law and the reparation of the victims of the Civil War and Franco’s regime”
- The Socialist Party of Oyón proposes to the City Council that the necessary measures be taken to comply with the current legislation
The delegate of the Government in the Basque Country, Marisol Garmendia, advocates the removal of a plaque located in the church of the district of Barriobusto (Oyón) that pays homage to eight neighbors of the town who were volunteers on the national side during the Spanish Civil War. “That plaque must be removed by virtue of what is determined by the Democratic Memory Act. The existence of these symbols contravenes the Act and the reparation of the victims of the Civil War and Franco’s regime,” says Garmendia. “I would like to reaffirm the firm commitment of the Government of Spain to the principles of truth, justice, reparation and non-repetition.”
In this sense, the socialist group of Oyón has requested the City Council of that town of Alavesa to take the necessary measures to comply with the current legislation. A proposal that Marisol Garmendia supports as a representative of the Government of Spain. “The Democratic Memory Act clearly establishes the government’s commitment to democratic principles and reparation for victims. We will work with the local administrations and the institutions involved to comply with the law, remove those elements that exalt the dictatorial regime and promote spaces that honor the democratic memory of our country.”
For Garmendia, “the elimination of Francoist symbols from public spaces is not only a legal mandate, but also an act of historical and moral justice. It is a necessary step to consolidate a fully inclusive democracy and to strengthen coexistence based on constitutional values.”
