The Ministry of Industry and Tourism grants €207 million to 89 projects for the improvement of the historical heritage with tourist use
The Ministry of Industry and Tourism has today published the proposal for a final resolution of the support line of the Program for Improving Competitiveness and Revitalizing Historical Heritage with Tourism Use, by which 89 projects will benefit from grants worth 207.6 million euros to improve tourism use in Goods of Cultural Interest (BIC), within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The projects benefiting from the aid – distributed among 13 autonomous communities (see full table at the end of the note) – have been selected taking into account characteristics of the destination and the viability, quality and tourist potential of the same. Among the valuation criteria, destinations with a risk of depopulation have also been considered to boost their tourist potential and strengthen social and territorial cohesion. The autonomous communities that have received the most bankable budget are Andalusia (42.9 million euros), Region of Murcia (35.4 million euros), Catalonia (30.7 million euros) and Comunitat Valenciana (29.3 million euros).
Minister Jordi Hereu considers it “essential to enhance and improve the competitiveness of Spain with a cultural tourism product that represents the identity, cultural diversity and rich historical heritage of our country” and in this sense he values “positively” the relevance of aid that “will serve to strengthen cultural tourism and that will contribute to the diversification, seasonalization and quality of our cultural offer, recognized internationally thanks to the 50 goods declared World Heritage by UNESCO”. Spain is the fourth country in Europe with the most sites declared a World Heritage Site and the fifth worldwide.
The actions to be carried out in these projects include the conservation, maintenance, valuation and rehabilitation of assets declared as Cultural Interest Assets for tourist use. It also includes other measures such as improving universal accessibility, improving energy efficiency and saving the consumption of water and energy resources, or reducing and compensating the carbon footprint, among others.
