The state-owned company Aguas de las Cuencas de España (ACUAES), of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, has started the works of the Alternative Driving of the Bajo del Añarbe Canal with a planned investment of 36 million euros and an execution period of 31 months.
Work has begun on clearing and cleaning the canal through which will pass the new water pipeline that will supply the Lastaola Pumping Station, from which the drive will start to the Drinking Water Treatment Station (ETAP) of Petritegui.
The action aims to guarantee the supply to 318,000 inhabitants of the municipalities of San Sebastián, Rentería, Passages, Hernani, Lasarte, Oiartzun, Usurbil, Lezo, Umieta and Astigarraga.
To do this, an intake will be built on the Urumea River next to the Lastaola Azud, which will provide the necessary flow to a new pumping station, located next to the
former hydroelectric plant, from which the flow will be driven to the ETAP of Petritegi through a pipeline of 4,860 meters executed in ductile foundry of 1,100 mm section.
Once the works are completed, the supply to the inhabitants of the Mancomunidad del Añarbe will be guaranteed, except for breaks and interruptions of the current Low Canal, and it will be possible to make scheduled stops of the latter to undertake its gradual rehabilitation and modernization, solving the problems of instability and avoiding the high flow losses that the infrastructure currently presents over the years.
The action will be co-financed by 80% with Next Generation EU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, under the agreement signed on 25 August 2022 between ACUAES and the public company Aguas del Añarbe-Añarbeko Urak for the execution, financing and exploitation of the works.
