The Department of Water of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has proceeded to the technical approval of the project of construction of the second phase of the Navarre Canal.
This infrastructure will allow the irrigation of up to a maximum of 20,214 hectares in the Autonomous Community of Navarre, distributed in 11 sectors, two of them, XI and XII, located on the left bank of the Ebro and the rest on the right bank of the river, with a total flow at source of 20 m3/s.
In addition, it will guarantee quality potable water to different population centers of the Navarre Bank by connecting the pipelines to the existing supply systems.
Connection between the first and second phases
The approved works consist of the execution of a connecting work between the first and second phases of the Navarre Canal and two connecting pipes with the Mostrakas raft, which will function as an additional reserve in emergency situations.
These actions will be complemented by the execution of the main pipelines, which will have a total length of 71.4 kilometers, divided into various sections between the successive irrigation and supply outlets. The pipelines will run parallel to agricultural roads, in order to minimize the affection on existing plots and services.
Likewise, the project includes the construction of 12 supply and irrigation outlets, as well as the bypass to the Corella branch and the Tudela Pond, which will have a capacity of 7.95 hm³ and will be a key element for the regulation of the irrigation sectors.
The works will have a tender budget of 373,731,170 euros and an execution period of 48 months.
The action will be added to the work already carried out in the first phase, which has allowed to transform more than 22,000 hectares distributed in 20 municipal terms into irrigation.
