The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), through the Institute for Energy Saving and Diversification (IDAE), has awarded 4,098,181.56 euros to two Navarre energy storage projects. One of them corresponds to the Montes de Cierzo I wind farm in Tudela and will receive an aid of almost 2.2 million euros. The other refers to the wind-photovoltaic park Corral del Molino I de Corella, currently under construction, and will receive about 1.9 million euros.
In the whole of Spain EUR 150 million of NextGenerationEU funds have been granted to boost 36 projects Storage connected to renewable generation facilities, mainly photovoltaic and wind power. These innovative initiatives, with a capacity of 904 MW, will boost progress to consolidate a 22 GW renewable storage park in Spain by 2030, in line with the objectives of the Energy Storage Strategy and the draft update of the Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) 2021-2030. The result of this call contributes to the fulfillment of the milestones and goals of Component 8 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR).
This first line of support for innovative energy storage projects hybridised to renewable facilities, included within the PERTE-ERHA for Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage, awards the total of the planned support –150 million– among the 36 projects selected in competitive competition, which demonstrates the sector’s high interest in storage to provide flexibility and adaptability to the electricity system. An interest that has surpassed the available budget, since the call for proposals has been attended by 266 files whose applications for grants multiplied by seven the amount available.
Storage, key to a 100% renewable system
Storage is a key technology to ensure a 100% renewable electricity system by 2050. By the end of 2023 almost 51% of the electricity generated in Spain is already of renewable origin.
PERTE EHRA is a complete program of instruments and measures to develop technology, knowledge, industrial capabilities and new business models that strengthen the position of Spain’s leadership in the field of clean energy. It will mobilize an investment of more than 16.3 billion, between contributions from the Recovery Plan and private funds.
In addition to this call for grants for innovative projects for hybrid energy storage with renewable facilities, PERTE_ERHA includes three other lines of grants aimed at activating innovative projects and new business models linked to storage, including those related to independent electrical storage, thermal and reversible pumping, for a total of 446 million. To these are added the aid programmes on self-consumption and the promotion of renewables in island territories, which have already been resolved, which are committed to storage as a key eligible technology.
