- The government delegate presided over the commemorative event of the Police Day, in which he highlighted “the transcendence, relevance and dimension of the work of these professionals”
- “Our crime rate is 3.5 times lower than the national average,” he said in his speech.
8 October 2025. The government delegate highlighted today that the Region of Murcia has reached in 2025 the historic maximum of National Police agents, with 1,766 personnel.
“Since 2018 we have recovered more than 330 National Police officers in the Region of Murcia, which represents an increase of 23 percent in the last 7 years. Without forgetting that it has been necessary to overcome the 235 troops destroyed in the two previous legislatures, between 2011 and 2018," said Francisco Lucas during his speech at the commemorative event of the Holy Guardian Angels, patrons of the National Police, held in the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga in Murcia.
The government delegate has indicated that, despite these good figures, the public employment offers convened annually by the Government of Spain, with replacement rates of 125%, will continue to exponentially increase our workforce to adapt to a changing world and new criminal challenges.
At the national level, Lucas has counted 10,708 new national police officers since 2018, and has said that all this contributes to keeping our region one of the safest in Spain, with a crime rate per 1,000 inhabitants 3.5 points lower than the national average.
Lucas reported that total crime in the Region of Murcia fell by 2.8% in the second quarter of the year, and cybercrime by 6%. “A fact that should not be overlooked. It is precisely in cyberspace that criminals are reinventing crime,” he said.
The government delegate thanked and acknowledged the work of all those agents, because, “with dedication, professionalism and sacrifice, you guarantee citizen security, protect the victims and preserve the rule of law,” he told them.
In this regard, Francisco Lucas has especially highlighted preventive work, active presence in streets and neighborhoods, communication with neighborhood associations and merchants, and specific plans to protect the most vulnerable groups.
“Prevention that, as is well known, reduces real insecurity and the feeling of insecurity among our citizens” he added.
The police, on the street, and in the palm of their hand
The government delegate has valued the capacity of the police to adapt to the new times and technological challenges, and has mentioned the importance of applications such as ALERTCOPS, which allows citizens to communicate quickly and discreetly with the State Security Forces and Bodies to warn about a crime or security incident, or the digital version of the DNI, which, he said, “has made Spain one of the first countries to have a system to accredit identity through the mobile phone and more than two million people have already been downloaded in Spain.”
In addition, Lucas recalled that, throughout 2025, the National Police and the Government Delegation have installed 13 points of update of the electronic ID in localities where there are no documentation units.
“And we have also implemented in the Airport of the Region of Murcia an automatic border control system that considerably speeds up the transit of citizens of the Schengen area and the United Kingdom, through a double biometric check of the facial and finger image to overcome the control autonomously.”
Finally, Lucas recalled the figure of Francisco Jiménez, Secretary General of the Government Delegation and former government delegate, who died last July.
“Paco was a public servant of unparalleled rank and nobility, and perhaps that’s why his ties to the national police were so extraordinary. The best way to remember it is not to forget it. And we, like the National Police do with theirs, will never do it,” he said.
Plaque and recognitions
During the event, the National Police has delivered to the mayor the city, José Ballesta, of a badge made through 3D printing by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena in recognition of the 1200 anniversary of the foundation of Murcia.
