October 31, 2025. The government delegate visited today the excavation and recovery works of the Roman Amphitheatre of Cartagena, in which the Government of Spain has invested more than 3.3 million euros in recent years.
“It is the duty of the public authorities to protect and preserve the historical and archaeological cultural heritage of Spain. And if there is a city in the Region of Murcia where that constitutional mandate acquires special meaning, it is Cartagena,” explained Francisco Lucas, who has indicated that this city is an example of “how the recovery of all that heritage has promoted its urban regeneration, growth and modernization.”
Accompanied by the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, Lucas has visited two of the performances that are currently being executed. On the one hand, the integral recovery of the northwestern quadrant of the amphitheater, the main cover and the double ring of the southeast quadrant of the bullring, which the Government of Spain financed with 2.3 million euros. And, on the other hand, the recovery work of the South-East Quadrant, to which the Central Executive allocated 750,000 euros.
The third of the performances, already finished, was the intervention in the southern quadrant of the Roman Amphitheater and consolidation of the double wall of the ring of the Plaza de Toros, which the Government of Spain financed with 297,000 euros.
The government delegate said that the investment leadership of the Government of Spain in the recovery of the architectural and archaeological heritage of Cartagena is evident, involves several ministries and affects other important projects besides the amphitheatre.
In this regard, it has detailed the 2.2 million euros granted by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism for the works of excavation and restoration of the portico of the Roman Theater, or the 2 million committed by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility in an agreement with the City Council and the Bishopric of Cartagena for the project of restoration of the cathedral of Santa María La Mayor of Cartagena.
“They are works and investments that will help Cartagena consolidate itself as one of the great heritage cities of the country and that demonstrate the importance of work and coordination between administrations when there is the necessary will and loyalty,” concluded Lucas.
