July 5, 2024. The delegate of the Government has today attended the opening to the public of the new Paseo Marítimo del Alamillo after some remodelling works in which the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has invested 3.5 million euros and which “will strengthen the tourist and aesthetic potential of the Port of Mazarrón”, said Mariola Guevara.
The new six-metre-wide pedestrian promenade and 2-metre-wide bi-directional bike path covers the length of the coastline of about 1,280 metres and will serve as a communication corridor between the current Rihuete promenade and the future viewpoint at Punta del Alamillo.
This new stretch allows to expand the area of movement, which until now was focused only on the Port of Mazarrón promenade, and will allow to interconnect new and existing infrastructures.
“This is a coastal strip of undoubted tourist and natural attraction, with the presence of beaches in a semi-urban environment. In this way, the whole of the promenade becomes an immense viewpoint on the Alamillo beach, because the design of the project highlights the landscape beauty of the stretch of coastline, avoiding the inclusion of elements that act as visual barriers,” added Guevara, who has been accompanied by the mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, and the head of the State Coast Demarcation, Daniel Caballero.
The delegate of the Government stressed that, since the displacement of the route from the beach line has been completed, the consequent release of space on the riverside has allowed a revitalization of the area and the creation of new spaces that, like viewpoints, create areas that facilitate the meeting, recreation or rest of the users, without affecting or being affected by the rest of the users.
Ramblas Los Lorentes and Balsicas
The walkways on the streets of Los Lorentes and Balsicas stand out as functional and symbolic elements. The crossing with the Rambla de Los Lorentes has 34 meters of light, which are covered by two wooden walkways, whose ends rest on one side on the stirrups and in the center on a concrete structure located in the center of the Rambla.
This concrete structure has been made in the shape of a boat, taking advantage of the bow and the stern of the boat to make two viewpoints. The 15-metre-light Balsicas Promenade is saved with two completely independent wooden walkways for pedestrians and bicycles.
The new promenade is equipped with the services of public lighting, drinking water, sanitation, rainwater collection, gardening and irrigation network and highlights the following elements.
- 58 luminaires on a column of 8 meters
- 112 palms datilles
- 10 aparca-bikes
- Benches every 30 meters
- 2 accessible toilet/locker rooms
- 8 laundry rooms
- 58 trash cans
The mayor of Mazarrón has thanked the Government of Spain for meeting this demand from the residents and visitors of Mazarrón and has valued the joint work between the city council and the State Coast Demarcation to make the seafront a reality.
Archaeological remains
During the project phase, the existence of archaeological remains in the route of the Paseo del Alamillo was recorded, but the scope and importance of the remains were known. For this reason, the necessary budget line was included to carry out the necessary investigations.
Once the excavations were carried out, it was discovered that in this area remained buried some remains linked to the Roman villa of Alamillo, which consists of a residential part, in which the presence of thermal baths stands out, and an industrial part with several pools for the manufacture of salting, all of a chronology that covers the 2nd and 2nd centuries after Christ.
The exhumed Roman structures include four pools and a space with lines of brick arches in both the longitudinal and transverse directions related to the existence of a heated area and various walls and small structures linked to them. A plastered wall from the 18th–19th century also appears
The presence of these remains meant the need to propose a modification of the design of the promenade in a stretch of 40 meters in length, which aims to preserve and value the archaeological finds, so that they can be observed by the user of the promenade. The works corresponding to this modification will be executed after the summer, once the influx of visitors greatly diminishes, seeking in this way to allow the enjoyment of the tour in summer time to everyone who wants it, without the inconveniences of the works.
The modification of the contract is already approved by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, and has meant an increase in the budget to a total amount of € 3,553,184.92.
