The Head of the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women of the Government Delegation in Melilla, Laura Segura, expressed her gratitude to the UNHCR team for the intense collaboration provided during the last six years of joint work, within the framework of the protection and accompaniment of women victims of gender violence.
Segura has valued the commitment and effort of the UN Refugee Agency in projects aimed at preventing and responding to violence, mitigating related risks and safeguarding the rights and well-being of women.
“UNHCR has not only offered a response to violence once it has happened, but has also acted in prevention, addressing its causes and integrating gender equality in all aspects of its work,” he said.
The head of the Coordination Unit especially recalled the work of UNHCR in the implementation of the ‘Protocol on Prevention and Response to Violence against Women’ within the framework of the Humanitarian Assistance Program, Project Seed, as well as collaboration in the follow-up and referral of cases.
He also stressed that the UNHCR team has been “a fundamental pillar in the work network created in the city against gender violence”, both in the immediate response to victims and in the articulation of prevention and awareness initiatives.
In this regard, Segura has also recognized the broader dimension of the work of the Agency, which has worked intensively to ensure the international protection of refugees, asylum seekers, displaced persons and stateless persons, ensuring the right to seek asylum and respect for fundamental rights.
Finally, Laura Segura has conveyed her personal thanks to Lorenzo Daniele and Laura Ribera, representatives of the UNHCR team in Melilla, with whom she had a last meeting last week.
“His dedication and commitment will remain an example of cooperation and humanity in our city. The Government Delegation reaffirms our commitment to continue strengthening the network of support and protection for women victims of gender violence in Melilla,” he concluded.
