The Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports (MEFPyD) in Melilla has developed during the first quarter of the course a training program aimed at bringing telecommunications and digital technologies to the students of the city.
The initiative has been possible thanks to the collaboration with the Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineers of the University of Malaga (UMA) and the Territorial Demarcation of the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers in Eastern Andalusia and Melilla, with the support of the Telecommunication Studies Promotion Plan of the Teleco RENTA program.
The Provincial Director of Education, Elena Fernández Treviño, highlighted the relevance of the project, which combines technical dissemination, practical workshops and professional updating. “We are bringing our young people closer to strategic and cutting-edge sectors, showing real career opportunities and fostering scientific and technological vocations. It is essential that Melilla is part of this drive towards STEM talent,” he said.
‘Technologies for a connected world’
The bulk of the program has been a series of talks given by Rafael Godoy Rubio, Director of the ETSI of Telecommunication of the UMA and a former student from Melilla. Under the title ‘Technologies for a Connected World’, the rapporteur has offered a clear, current and applied vision on the role of telecommunications in society.
The sessions were held at the IES Juan Antonio Fernández Pérez, IES Miguel Fernández, IES Virgen de la Victoria and IES Leopoldo Queipo, with additional participation from the IES Enrique Nieto. In total, 300 students and teachers of Technological Baccalaureate have attended.
Practical workshops for students of 2nd ESO
The program has been reinforced with experimental workshops on electromagnetism, physics and communications taught by the company Planeta Explora in the Aula Magna of the IES Leopoldo Queipo. These activities, aimed at students of the 2nd year of ESO, have brought together 250 students, allowing them to understand scientific concepts from a practical, manipulative and motivating methodology.
Specialized session for teachers and ICT professionals
The initiative has also included a specific professional refresher session entitled ‘From University to Connected Territory: Innovation and Digital Justice’, given by Rafael Godoy Rubio and Ainoa Celaya, Dean of the Territorial Demarcation of the College of Telecommunications Engineers. This paper has addressed key issues such as technological expert testing, digital innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities in the ICT field.
Commitment to technological training
The Provincial Director has highlighted the relevance of this type of initiative for Melilla. “Our students must have access to information, guidance and real experiences about the technological sectors that lead the transformation of the world. With programs like this, we continue to expand opportunities and strengthen educational quality in Melilla,” he said.
Fernández Treviño thanked the University of Malaga, the College of Telecommunications Engineers and the participating educational centers for their involvement, and said that the Provincial Directorate will continue to promote scientific and technological dissemination activities throughout the course.
