“In Melilla, the university represents a space for meeting, knowledge and opportunities, an open door to the future for our youth”.
The Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, in her speech at the opening ceremony of the academic year of the University of Granada at the Melilla Campus, congratulated the rectoral team and all the staff of the University of Granada (UGR) for the constant effort they make to continue consolidating an institution of reference, not only at the national level, but also at the international level.”
The head of the Government Delegation, accompanied by the Secretary General of Universities, Francisco García; the Rector, Pedro Mercado; the President of the City, Juan José Imbroda; and the Dean of the Faculty of Education and Sports Sciences, Lucía Herrera, as well as vice-rectors, deans, professors, students and members of the university community, has expressed their “sincere to the University for inviting the Government of Spain to participate in such a significant moment for the university community,” highlighting that this collaboration symbolizes the commitment to higher education.
Moh acknowledged that the inaugural lesson offered by the Secretary General of Universities, Francisco García, “has made us reflect on education as a bastion of democracy in the rule of law.” A totally up-to-date message for the moment in which we live, has apostilled, given that education “is the basis of a free and critical citizenship, the most powerful tool to defend the democratic values that unite us and sustain us as a country”.
Link of cultures
Sabrina Moh has placed special emphasis on the role of the Melilla Campus in our city. “The Government of Spain firmly believes that the university is a fundamental pillar of the social and economic development of the territories. In the case of Melilla, its role is even more special: this campus embodies the link between cultures, the diversity that enriches and the coexistence that defines us,” he said.
For this reason, he added, “we will continue working to strengthen ties with the University of Granada, supporting initiatives that promote training, research and knowledge transfer”, essential elements for the social and economic development of Melilla and the country as a whole.
For the Delegate, university and city cannot be understood separately: “The university cannot be understood outside its environment, and Melilla cannot be understood without its university. They both need each other, complement each other and empower each other.”
On behalf of the Government of Spain, Moh has reiterated the institution’s commitment to the University of Granada “and to everything it represents: knowledge, equity, inclusion and shared progress.”
