The Delegate of the Government in Melilla, Sabrina Moh, has responded firmly to the criticisms made by the Popular Party about the opening of the University Hospital of Melilla (HUME), and has done so with a clear message: “We’re selling HUME, not smoke.”
In an interview given to RNE, the head of the Delegation reproached the PP for trying to “confuse and deceive the Melillenses with lies” and recalled that this Hospital “is a palpable and tangible reality thanks to the Government of Spain’s commitment to public health”.
“What is clear and what is a reality is that this government has put in place an infrastructure as important as the university hospital: it has built it, it has inaugurated it and it is putting it into operation. A hospital does not open from one day to the next, it requires phases, and we are working on that,” he said.
Hospital in operation
The Delegate has highlighted that more than 14,000 people have already been treated at the new hospital since its opening. External consultations on rheumatology, traumatology, internal medicine, cardiology, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and laboratories are currently underway, in addition to the transfer of the 061 service.
The highest representative of the Government of Spain in the city explained that the first phase of the transfer is already completed and that work is being done on the second, the most complex, which includes operating theatres, hospitalization and ICU: “The hospital is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year or, at the latest, in the first quarter of 2026.”
Thus, he assured that they will try to speed up the deadlines because their objective is “to be able to do it as quickly as possible, but always thinking about the patient’s well-being and above all also about suitable and optimal conditions for workers”.
The Government Delegate also stressed the magnitude of the project: “We are talking about an investment of 150 million euros, seven times greater than the Hospital Comarcal, with state-of-the-art technology and improved services, which places the public health of Melilla at the forefront”.
Deceiving the citizenry
In his statements, Moh has insisted that the PP “returns to the usual: if they are not in government, it is the apocalypse. And it’s not like that. They try to confuse the citizens, they try to deceive them all the time. But the reality is that the Hospital is in operation, and any Melillense can see and visit it.”
Thus, it has been forceful to remember that the paralysis of the hospital works was the result of the management of the PP, “those who sold smoke were them with their nefarious management, which delayed this infrastructure for years. Now, the HUME exists, it is under way and any Melillense can see and visit it,” he added.
Finally, the Delegate expressed her satisfaction that it was a progressive coalition government that made this historic demand of Melilla a reality: “It is a reason for collective pride and a fulfilled commitment to citizenship.”
