The Government Delegation today welcomed a minute’s silence in condemnation of the murder by gender violence of María Dolores, 86 years old yesterday, 2 July, in Asturias.
With this crime, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners amounts to 22 so far in 2025, and to 1,316 since 2003, when data on gender violence began to be officially recorded in Spain.
In addition, 12 minors have been orphaned so far this year as a result of these crimes. Since 2013, 65 girls and boys have been killed for gender-based violence against their mothers, and 481 minors have been orphaned by this cause.
The Head of the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women of the Government Delegation in Melilla, Laura Segura, has been in charge of reading the institutional declaration, stressing that “as a democratic society, we cannot tolerate any type of violence against women because they are women”.
“Male violence is a structural violence, based on sexist discrimination, inequality and imbalance in power relations between women and men,” he said, noting that violence against women and girls “violates their fundamental rights to life, liberty, physical and moral integrity, equality and dignity.”
Unity versus negationism
The Head of Unit has stressed that “despite the negationist approaches of male violence, we will persevere and continue to move towards a more just, egalitarian and free society of male violence.” In this regard, it has called on all institutions, administrations and citizens to maintain this struggle based on unity, firmness and collective commitment.
From the Ministry of Equality, through the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, it is recalled that telephone 016 and the other services of attention and advice are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and are accessible to all people.
On the other hand, it is also recalled that in an emergency situation you can call 112 or the emergency telephones of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). In case it is not possible to make a call and in a situation of danger, you can use the ALERTCOPS application, from which an alert signal will be sent to the police with geolocation.
These means of assistance can be used both by victims and by anyone who knows or suspects a situation of gender violence.
