The number of unemployed people registered at the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE) Office in Melilla, at the end of June, stands at 7,736. These are 290 people less than the previous month (-3.61%) and 585 unemployed less than a year ago (-7.03%).
The Provincial Director of the SEPE, Jorge Vera, has appeared before the media, has pointed out that the fall in unemployment is due, among other reasons, to the summer hiring of the month and that it has involved 400 more people in the Services sector than in the previous year.
By economic sectors, although all of them experience a drop in the number of unemployed, it is the Services sector that has reduced the number of claimants the most with 235 fewer people. In the Construction Sector there are 30 fewer unemployed; 17 fewer employees as far as the former unemployed are concerned, 6 fewer unemployed in Industry and two fewer unemployed in the Agriculture sector.
“You cannot talk about the Employment Plan,” he explained, “because most of the contracts that were made last month have not yet been mechanized, so they have not been computed as of June.”
For this reason, the reduction of 290 people as job seekers has been described as a success “because it shows much more than in June of the previous year: hiring has grown”.
In addition, he has also referred to other active employment policy programs such as experiential programs, of which half ended a few days ago with the delivery at the UNED of the diplomas “being 30 the students who had recruitment, certificate of professionalism and a professional experience”.
He also referred to the Integral Projects, which are a mixed, “really dual” training and which is being carried out thanks to two entities awarded this SEPE program, or the First Experience program that represents a job opportunity for young people.
In addition to all that, Jorge Vera has referred to the OPEA program - Vocational Training for Employment, which this year has 3 million euros, double the previous year, or the training that is being provided by the State Foundation for Training in Employment (FUNDAE) for companies or the digitization pack of companies.
In his relationship of reasons he has also valued the meetings with the employers, social agents and companies to dynamize the market and facilitate contracting, while he has announced that soon the Joint Commission for the Pact for Youth Employment will begin “something pioneering that is not happening anywhere in the country, and that it is our responsibility, as administrations, to carry out to be able to retain these young people who may have an important future and a presence in this city”.
Historical affiliation data
With regard to the Social Security data, the number of members has stood at 25,120, which vera has described as “data and a historical record in the whole series”, given that along with the previous month it assumed to be above the 25,000 afflicted, something that had not been given since 2020.
A figure that represents an increase of 20 (0.08%) compared to the previous month and 244 more affiliates (0.98%) compared to June 2024. Specifically, in the General System there are 20,668 affiliates; 4,354 affiliates in the Autonomous System; and 77 affiliates in the Sea System.
As for the number of contracts that have materialized over the past month, the figure amounts to 1,325, which means 48 contracts less than in May (-3.50%) but 126 more than a year ago (10.51%).
The Provincial Director of SEPE has highlighted the fact that out of the total number of recruitments 512 have been indefinite, which means 38.6%, following the same line as what happens in the national average.
“As summer holidays begin in the summer sector, more is hired in the services sector, so temporary hiring increases a little more but still it is around 40% indefinite hiring, something that happens month by month since the labor reform was approved,” he said.
As Vera has detailed, in terms of registered unemployment, according to sex, women with 5,088 unemployed, represent 65.77% of the total, compared to the 2,648 unemployed men in our city, which represents 34.23%.
