The Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, and the Superior Chief of Police of Melilla, José Antonio Togores, have presented the act of the Day of the Victims of Terrorism in the National Police that will take place next Monday, June 16, at 8:00 p.m. in the Hernández Park.
This commemoration was established last year to pay tribute to the national police officers who died in acts of service, victims of terrorist actions over the last decades. “It is a duty and a commitment of all to pay tribute to the policemen, to the 188 policemen who at the time gave their lives in defense of peace and freedom,” said the Superior Chief of Police.
Togores recalled that this date was chosen in memory of María José García Sánchez, the first female police officer murdered by ETA on June 16, 1981, when she was only 23 years old. “On that occasion, June 16 was established as a date to pay tribute to the victims of terrorism in the National Police,” he said.
In addition, the Superior Chief wanted to highlight among the victims two melillenses: Diego García Calderón and Juan José Visiedo Calero; “two young men who were serving in the good of the citizenry, in the good of society, and who were vilely murdered.”
As Togores explained, this is the third institutional anniversary celebrated by the National Police, along with the Anniversary Day - January 13 - and the feast of the Holy Guardian Angels - October 2.
Dedicated to victims and their memory
For her part, the Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, has stressed the relevance of this day “especially dedicated to the victims and their memory”. “It is important that we can remember them and continue to keep the memories alive of those people who gave their lives in the act of service,” he said.
Sabrina Moh has also called on the citizens of Melilla to participate in this event in which “we are going to remember all these victims and we are also going to continue honoring them as we always do”. Thus, he has highlighted the importance of the presence of the citizens in this tribute.
But not only that, the Delegate has also taken the opportunity to thank the professionals of the Superior Police Headquarters for their involvement in the organization of this event “full of symbolism and emotion”, and has reiterated that “the memory of the victims will remain indelible in our memory, our hearts and also in the history of the National Police”.
