“The Minimum Vital Income (IMV) payroll protects 5,518 minors in Melilla, which represents 46.2% of the beneficiaries.” The Government Delegate, Sabrina Moh, has made public the January data of the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration.
“The IMV is a benefit to eradicate severe poverty and that, in our city, consolidates the social protection network of the Government of Spain and that aims not to leave anyone behind,” he stressed.
Thus, in January, the IMV payroll reached 2,946 households in which 11,938 people live, according to the latest statistics published by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). The average amount of the benefit is 640.21 euros per month per household and, overall, this month’s payroll has amounted to more than 2 million euros.
“It is a protection tool for the most vulnerable but it also contributes positively to the local economy,” said the Delegate, referring to the fact that the consumption of these families is carried out in Melilla establishments.
As he recalled, the IMV is a benefit aimed at preventing the risk of poverty and social exclusion of people who live alone or are integrated into a coexistence unit and lack basic economic resources.
One of its priority objectives is to address child poverty. It should be noted in this regard that 75.2% of the households where the IMV arrives live children and adolescents. In total, there are 2,218 households with minors among which there are 520 single parents. On the other hand, if we look at the profile of the beneficiaries, 46.2% are minors, in particular, 5,518.
One of the main tools to combat the risk of child poverty is the Child Aid Supplement (CAPI). This month, the ICSC has reached 2,421 units of coexistence. This form of IMV involves an aid of 115 euros per household per month in the case of children from 0 to 3 years; 80.5 euros per month for each child between 3 and 6 years; and 57.5 euros per month for each child between 6 and 18 years. The average amount of the supplement in January was 67.15 euros per child and 122.90 euros per household with children.
On the other hand, the beneficiaries of the IMV are characterized by having a marked female profile. In January, 39.4% of the headlines (1,835) and 52.3% of the beneficiaries are women.
More than 18,000 protected melillenses since its creation
In January, there are 571 more active benefits than there were a year ago in this same period, which means an increase of 24%. These households are home to 2,539 beneficiaries more than those registered in January 2024 (+21.2%).
In cumulative terms since June 2020, when this benefit was launched, in the midst of a pandemic, the IMV has reached 4,561 homes and protected the 18,227 melillenses that are part of them. Where 9,143 are boys, girls and adolescents, 50% of the total.
Since the entry into force of this policy, Social Security has allocated 78,630,719 euros to pay the payroll for this benefit in Melilla.
