The Head of the Coordination Unit Against Violence against Women of the Government Delegation in Melilla, Laura Segura Sarompas, gave a talk on Gender Violence to the cloister of the Center for Adult People (ECA) ‘Carmen Conde Abellán’ last Friday.
Laura Segura has highlighted that this center and its teaching staff is the first to join an initiative that aims to bring awareness about the reality of gender violence and its prevention to the entire educational community.
The main objectives of this two-hour training are to provide teachers with knowledge on gender violence, for their prevention and action in specific cases.
As Segura has pointed out, it is about working on the prevention of gender violence aimed at teachers "being fundamental that teachers know the uniqueness of this violence as the most extreme manifestation of machismo and inequality".
“Educational centers are spaces where the population spends many hours of their lives, it is a fundamental space for prevention,” said Segura, who has indicated that “the eradication of inequality, which is the origin of gender violence, has a fundamental pillar in education.”
Training activities for professionals such as this one are very necessary, especially at a time when the negationist discourses “endanger the progress achieved”. “The risks of setbacks are fought with firm democratic convictions and with an education in values, rights, principles, equality and justice,” he stressed. And he has apostilled that “coeducation is one of the fundamental pillars to achieve a society free of violence against women and girls.”
The Head of Unit stressed that this session addressed the concept of gender violence, and highlighted international and national legislation that calls for the work of equality and the prevention of male violence, the causes, types and consequences of gender violence, the prevention of violence, and state and local resources for the care of victims.
Emphasis has been placed on the importance of extending the concept of violence, with a view to proceedings, to all violence suffered by women because they are women, in accordance with international treaties and specifically the Istanbul Convention. And tools have been offered to improve the performance and detection, and guidelines to follow before the story of a victim. The session has also served to analyze the latest published studies and the results related to minors and gender violence.
As Segura has explained, coeducation is the main strategy for the prevention of gender violence and for laying the foundations for an equal and respectful coexistence between men and women in society. “To develop it in classrooms, teacher training is essential, since equality between men and women is not always present in the initial training of teachers,” he said.
"Coeducation saves lives and teachers have a very powerful weapon to end male violence, their activism and active positioning in the fight against Gender Violence is necessary," he said.
Segura thanked the centre, the management team and its equality officer for having had the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women for this training and also thanked the teachers who attended this session, whose commitment and participation were highlighted.
