“Education is a fundamental tool to combat gender violence and the Government Delegation wanted to promote this type of competition within our classrooms.”
This afternoon, the Government Delegation hosted the awards ceremony of the II Children and Youth Competition for Equality and Against Gender Violence aimed at students from all educational stages and all educational centers in Melilla.
The highest representative of the Government of Spain in our city, Sabrina Moh, has thanked all the participants - some of 400 schoolchildren from almost all the educational centers of the city -, the parents of the same, and the management teams of all the educational centers as well as those responsible for equality of the same, their commitment to equality and the support shown to this activity that has been carried out by the Coordination Unit against Violence on Women in collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of Education.
Moh recalled that last year they explained that the intention of the Government Delegation was that this contest should continue and do so every year to work on the issue of equality from an early age.
“This is a task for everyone, students, teachers, parents, society… that is, it is a shared task, it is a task for everyone and for everyone and from the different administrations we have to continue to promote this type of activity,” he said.
Moh has highlighted the fact that 400 people have taken part in this second edition of the contest, a very important figure, he has stressed, which has also counted on high-level works. “Our young people are the future and we have seen in the words of very young boys some weighty arguments and an awareness that is being established from an early age,” he said.
He has also stressed that it is important for society to know the problem that exists with gender violence “to be able to solve it” and that is why he has valued the work of all people of equality and that of the educational centers “where students, teachers and parents align themselves to make education that necessary tool to change society”.
Power of social transformation
The Head of the Unit, Laura Segura, for her part, expressed her satisfaction at the great reception of this contest, as well as her gratitude to the Provincial Directorate, the educational centers, those responsible for equality for their collaboration, and especially the students who participated and who “through their work have expressed their rejection of gender violence and their commitment to equality.”
As he recalled, the eradication of all the inequality that is the origin of violence against women has its fundamental pillar in education.
“We know that schools are not just transmitters of knowledge, schools, besides being transmitters of values, have a powerful power of social transformation. And these recognitions today and your involvement are proof of this,” he said.
Segura has highlighted the involvement of teachers and students to achieve a school free of male violence. “You are the future and thanks to you and you will move towards a society in equality and free of male violence,” he said.
