Social Security registered 24,576 members in August in Melilla, which means an increase of 285 employees so far this year.
Despite the drop of 87 people from the average membership that has been registered in the past month (-0.35%), the membership registered on the last day of the month has increased by 913 people.
By sector, the affiliation in our city is reflected in the following tide: the General Regime occupies 20,147; the self-employed involve 4,339 and the Regime of the Sea, 90 people.
As for the data released today by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy, Melilla closed last month with an increase of 308 more unemployed (3.79%), which leaves the total number of job seekers at 8,436.
As explained by the Provincial Director of the Public Service of State Employment (SEPE), Jorge Vera, the main factor that has influenced the increase in registered unemployment has been the completion of the Employment Plans of the Autonomous City.
“The completion of these Employment Plans developed by the local Executive involves more than 400 jobs that have been extinguished,” he explained. In this sense, the Provincial Director of the SEPE has pointed out that, apart from the hiring associated with the summer season, we see a positive trend in the creation of structural employment.”
43.8% of undefined contracts
During the last month of August in our city a total of 1,183 contracts were carried out, of which 519 are indefinite, which is 43.8% of the total, 6.4 points above the national average.
The head of this body in our city recalled that, before the approval of the Labor Reform by the Executive presided over by Pedro Sánchez, indefinite contracts accounted for 8% of the total.
As far as unemployment benefits are concerned, in the autonomous city there are 3,018 beneficiaries either of contributory benefit (1,301 beneficiaries), Allowance (1,530 beneficiaries) or Active Insertion Income (187 beneficiaries) and the average amount received per beneficiary is 942.7 euros/month.
National data
The head of the Provincial Directorate of the SEPE has also referred to the national data, where the number of people in unemployment registered has increased by 21,884 people (0.86%) in relation to the previous month.
In seasonally adjusted terms, the registered unemployment fell by 7,724 people. The registered unemployment has stood at 2,572,121 people, the lowest figure in a month of August since 2008.
Female unemployment has increased by 10,913 women (0.71%) and stands at a total of 1,550,658. The lowest figure in the historical series in a month of August.
As of August 2023, female unemployment fell by 78,783 women (-4.83%). Male unemployment increases by 10,971 men (1.09%) and stands at 1,021,463 registered unemployed. For its part, unemployment among young people under the age of 25 rose in the month of August by 2,186 people (1.25%) compared to the previous month and stood at a total of 177,112, the lowest figure in the series in one month of August. It has already accumulated 40 consecutive months of year-on-year falls.
The total number of contracts registered during the month of August has been 1,040,159. Of this total, 389,735 work contracts of an indefinite nature have been registered, 37.47% of all contracts. The temporary contracts registered in the month of August 2024 were 650,424, 19,480 (-2.91%) contracts less than the same month of the previous year.
As for unemployment benefits in July, the existing beneficiaries at the end of the month were 1,804,488 (+1.4% year-on-year). The coverage rate stands at 75.55%, the highest in a month of July since 2010.
