This Saturday, at 12 noon, the Plaza de España will host an institutional flag raising to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the creation of the General Police of the Kingdom, historical predecessor of what is today the National Police.
The Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, and the Superior Chief of Police, José Antonio Togores, presented this lunchtime the institutional act, which will take place in the main cities throughout Spain and will serve as the first act of a battery of events and actions that are going to be developed to celebrate the bicentenary of the institution.
The highest representative of the Government of Spain in our city has thanked, congratulated and valued the work of all the agents of the National Police Force, especially those of the Superior Headquarters of Melilla.
“The work they do to ensure the free exercise of our rights is extremely important,” he said. “The work they carry out on a day-to-day basis is also important and, therefore, as Delegate of the Government, I would like once again to thank and publicly congratulate all our agents, all the staff who serve in this Headquarters for their work, for their involvement, for their commitment and for their daily dedication so that we can exercise our rights freely,” he stressed.
The head of the Government Delegation and the Superior Chief have thanked all the institutions and entities, including the Autonomous City or the General Command, that have collaborated for the support and collaboration they have provided for the development of this act, while at the same time they have called on the Melillense citizens to surrender the National Police Corps in this very important event.
Real Cédula
“Two hundred years ago, in 1824, through Real Cédula, the General Police of the Kingdom was created with missions very similar to those that the National Police has today,” explained Togores, who clarified that subsequently there have been different changes in the security force until today, “but there has been a continuity in which, the National Police, is proud to represent and guarantee the security of all citizens of Spain.”
As he said, the raising of the flag is going to be carried out with the support of the General Command, and the event will also have an emotional tribute to the fallen with a corana in the monolith.
Togores has advanced that it will be a year full of events, performances, informative talks, that will take place in the educational centers or in the Plaza de Toros, among others, and that will involve exhibitions or blue lighting of emblematic sites such as the Superior Headquarters or the Assembly of the City.
“We are going to decorate the Headquarters with posters commemorating the 200th anniversary,” he said, while advancing that the bicentennial logo is going to be placed in those places where citizens are habitually active, such as the Port, the Airport…
“We are 200 years old since the constitutional order to protect and guarantee the free exercise of citizens’ rights and freedoms and protect citizens’ security,” he said, adding that he wanted to be able to do so “for another longer period, if possible.”
