Melilla hosts from today to Friday the meeting of the Education Committee of the Council of the European Union (EU), with the participation of half a hundred representatives of the 27 Member States.
The conclave, also known as the Meeting of Education Councillors, involves the participation of the Education Councillors of the different permanent representations of the Member States to the EU (REPER-EU), as well as a delegation of the European Commission and another of the organizing ministries, that is, the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
The Delegate of the Government, Sabrina Moh, has highlighted the role that Melilla will acquire during this week not only for the whole country, but for the entire EU and has pointed out the historical nature of this European event as it is the first time that our city hosts a meeting of the Council of the EU, which is one of the seven high institutions of the European Union.
Not only that, as explained by the highest representative of the Executive of the Nation in our city, the election of Melilla for this meeting acquires special relevance and symbology because it is the last meeting that Spain is going to hold during its Presidency before passing the witness to Belgium.
In addition, regarding the conclave itself, Moh explained that it is a “big event” because it will close all the issues addressed during the semester in education before passing the witness to the Belgian Presidency. “It is the last event of the semester program of the Spanish Presidency in education and training and constitutes the event of reflection and closure in this matter,” he stressed.
Europe in Melilla
As the head of the Government Delegation explained, the presence of representatives of the 27 EU Member States in our city will also help them to get to know Melilla and its reality at first hand.
Thus, in addition to the work sessions that are going to be carried out, an intense program of activities has been prepared during the three days that are going to remain in our city.
“This event is going to help half a hundred people from all over Europe get to know our city first-hand, which is an example of coexistence, our gastronomy and our historical-cultural heritage,” the Delegate said.
The representatives of the different countries of the EU are going to know the modernist center, Melilla La Vieja, different educational centers of the city both for children and Primary and Secondary Education, among other places, and they are going to witness different performances and they will be able to taste the rich gastronomy of our city.
In the opinion of the Delegate, the choice of Melilla as the venue to host one of the meetings within the Spanish Presidency of the EU, is a further sign of the support that the Executive of Pedro Sánchez are giving to our city.
