The Head of the Coordination Unit Against Violence Against Women of the Government Delegation in Melilla, Laura Segura, has announced that the Family and Women’s Unit of the Provincial National Police Headquarters in Melilla (UFAM), located in the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade; Corporal 1 of the Civil Guard Salvador Vargas Oliva, Head of the Women’s Minor Team (EMUME) and Head of the Area of Crimes Against the People of the Criminal Investigation Department of Justice.
As explained, UFAM is the operational group responsible for receiving complaints related to gender violence, domestic violence and crimes against sexual freedom, as well as the protection of victims.
This recognition is intended to highlight its firm commitment to the eradication of gender violence since its creation, assuming the competences of investigation and prosecution of criminal offences in the field of gender violence and crimes against sexual freedom, along with the activity of protection of victims.
As for Vargas Oliva, the Head of the Unit wanted to reward the development of her professional practice demonstrating a firm commitment to the eradication of gender violence and the promotion of equality, highlighting her specialized attention to the victims and their sons and daughters with special sensitivity and empathy and to facilitate, from the proximity and professionalism, the coordination and immediacy of the daily work of the team that composes the EMUME of Melilla, working in direct contact with women and their families, accompanying them in the hard vital process through which they pass, and making them feel in a safe environment.
Finally, with regard to Laura Santa Pau, La Menina wishes to highlight her commendable work as Chief Prosecutor and as Prosecutor for Violence against Women in Melilla, having demonstrated during her professional practice a daily and tireless commitment to eradicate the violence suffered by women because they are women and to promote equality.
Honorable mentions
In this edition, as has been the norm in previous years, the work of entities will also be recognized through a specific mention, specifically the Child and Primary Education Center (CEIP) León Solá, the NGO Fiet Gratia and the Penitentiary Center of Melilla.
The recognition of the educational center is due to the tireless work of its cloister to convey the importance and need of an egalitarian education for boys and girls, in an environment of difficult performance and to achieve a school free of male violence. “This award recognizes the work of the school’s teaching team, its equality officer and the commitment and participation of its students,” said Segura.
As for the NGO Fiet Gratia, an organization specialized in human trafficking and sexual exploitation, which has as its main objective to create opportunities for integral development for the most disadvantaged people who incur in situations of vulnerability, the recognition I want to highlight their defense and work with victims of trafficking and their fight against gender violence, in our city and at the national level, “highlighting their work for the prevention of gender violence and the improvement of the situation and attention to women in situations of risk or extreme vulnerability, in contexts of prostitution, sexual exploitation and trafficking”.
And the third mention will be granted to the Melilla Penitentiary Center, for the work that the professionals of the center have been developing in terms of equality, both with victims, relatives and prisoners. “The Penitentiary Center carries out essential work to prevent the future commission of new crimes and eradicate gender violence with specific programs,” said the Head of the Unit.
