The Spanish Government, through the Spanish Agricultural Guarantee Fund (FEGA), will distribute a total of 122,536 kilograms of food to the disadvantaged people of Melilla this October.
As explained by the Director of the functional area of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Government Delegation, Isabel Bassets, these foods have a value of 185,000 euros, and they add to the distribution that the Government of Spain made last May, so, between both deliveries, the amount of food allocated for Melilla this year amounts to 156,000 kilos, with a total value of 235,000 euros.
The head of the area has reported that the specific aid consists of the free distribution to disadvantaged families of 15 types of basic food, non-perishable and easy to transport and store. In particular, they are white rice, cooked beans and chickpeas, biscuits, canned tuna and sardines, cocoa, noodles, spaghetti, meat preserve, canned menestra, fruit in syrup, fried tomato and fruit and chicken pots.
From the 15 authorized associations and through their associated distribution warehouses Red Cross and Food Bank, a total of 876 families will be served at this stage with a report of need, which involves a total of 3,640 final beneficiaries.
“It represents an increase compared to the previous phase of almost 400 beneficiaries and about 130 families,” explained Bassets, who pointed out that families are also given information on offices that manage other social assistance as an accompanying measure.
Each beneficiary of the program has a total of 24 kilos of food at this stage, which means that a family of 5 members will receive 120 kilos of these foods.
Because this aid can only be received if there is a positive assessment report of the need signed by a registered social worker, the Government Delegation has updated a transparency portal (which can be consulted on the web /content/mpt/en/government_delegation/melilla/projects-ci/Tabl-n-de-Anuncios-Agricultura.html ) where it is indicated which associations are authorized for this distribution of food, and how to contact them through their postal addresses and email, as well as a list of necessary documentation to be presented.
