· Alcorcón is a “very safe” municipality, with a crime rate that is among the lowest in the Community of Madrid
The delegate of the Government of Spain in the Community of Madrid, Francisco Martín, has co-chaired today together with the mayor of Alcorcón, Candelaria Testa Romero, the Local Security Board of the municipality, in which the security devices of the different services and police bodies that will operate during the celebration of the municipal patron saint’s festivities, which will take place from August 31 to September 9, have been reviewed.
The meeting was attended by the delegate councillor for Citizen Security, David López Martín, the delegate councillor for Culture, Celebrations and Senior Citizens, Raquel Rodríguez Segundo, the delegate councillor for Citizen Participation, Feminism and Cooperation, Sonia López Cedena, the chief commissioner of the National Police Station, Antonio Álvarez Zapata, the chief commissioner of the Local Police, Eduardo de María García, as well as representatives of the Civil Guard, the Civil Protection volunteers, the Madrid Red Cross and the Alcón Red Community.
Close collaboration between National Police and Municipal Police
The Local Security Board has approved the security and emergency plan for this year’s patron saint’s festivities, which includes a security system made up of 112 municipal police who will be supported by members of the National Police and the Civil Guard in their area of responsibility.
In statements to the media, the government delegate has highlighted the “extraordinary collaboration” between the police forces and the professionalism of its members and has recognized the “extraordinary effort” made by the City Council to ensure that the patron saint’s parties take place in the best conditions of security.
Positive evolution of security in a "very safe" municipality
The meeting analyzed the evolution of security in the municipality during the first six months of this year and took into account the crime data from January 1 to June 30, 2024 in relation to the same period last year.
These data indicate that there has been a significant decrease in the total number of registered criminal offenses, from 3,813 in 2023 to 3,506 in 2024, which means a decrease of 8.03%. So the crime rate of the municipality (criminal offences per thousand inhabitants) goes from 20.83 to 19.15 points, with a decrease of 1.7 points.
This is a figure well below the average rate of the Community of Madrid (which is 60.03 according to the Crime Balance of the Secretary of State for Security), which shows that Alcorcón is “a very safe municipality and evolves very positively”, in the opinion of Francisco Martín, “thanks to that professionalism and that extraordinary coordination of National Police and Municipal Police and the commitment of the Municipal Corporation”.
Commitment against sexual assaults with violet spots
Francisco Martín has also pointed out that the Local Security Board has reaffirmed the municipal commitment in the fight against sexual assaults and abuse of women, not only during the development of the patron saint’s festivities of Alcorcón but throughout the year.
Thus, it has been agreed to install violet dots in the fairgrounds and other enclaves, with qualified professionals, and to implement the coordination protocol with the Local Police and the National Police, if necessary.
It is about “increasing the awareness of women and men as well, raising awareness throughout society and engaging all institutions in the fight against male violence and sexual assaults,” said the government delegate, who thanked the City of Alcorcón for its “exemplary commitment” in this matter, within our Community.
Visit to the Municipal Point of the Regional Observatory against Gender Violence
After the celebration of the Local Security Board, Francisco Martín, accompanied by Candelaria Testa, made a visit to the Municipal Point of the Regional Observatory against Gender Violence, at the Ana Orantes Ruiz Center, headquarters of the Department of Feminism. (This venue bears this name in tribute to the woman who in 1997 denounced in a television interview the violence to which she had been subjected by her ex-husband and thirteen days after her testimony on television was murdered by him.)
Francisco Martín recalled that, in order to recognize the commitment of the City of Alcorcón in the fight against gender violence, in the coming months the national center ATENPRO, Telephone Service of Attention and Protection for victims of violence against women, will be located in this municipality. “It is a reference centre in the fight against male violence, fruit of the commitment also of the Government of Spain, to reinforce all our capacities in this fight in the most effective way possible,” concluded the government delegate.
