The government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín Aguirre, held a meeting today with the president and director of the Committee of Entities Representing Persons with Disabilities (CERMI) of the Community of Madrid, Óscar Moral Ortega and María Jesús Baile.
This meeting comes a few days after the extraordinary plenary session of the Congress approved the Reform Proposal of Article 49 of the Spanish Constitution, which extends the rights of people with disabilities and eliminates from the text the expression "physically, sensory and psychic diminished".
Thus, the new wording of article 49 recognizes that persons with disabilities exercise the rights provided for in Title I under real and effective conditions of freedom and equality. It also establishes that the public authorities will promote policies that guarantee the full personal autonomy and social inclusion of people with disabilities, in universally accessible environments, and promote the participation of their organizations, in the terms established by law. Finally, the specific needs of women and children with disabilities will be particularly addressed.
CERMI is the platform for representation, defense and action of Spanish citizens with disabilities whose purpose is to advance in the recognition of their rights and achieve full citizenship in equal rights and opportunities with the other components of society.
