The delegate of the Government to the Community of Madrid, Mercedes González, has today presented 76 new agents of the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard, “the most important reinforcement of recent decades”. “Life, destiny or chance, call it whatever you want, has decided that my last official act as delegate of the Government is this presentation”, began Mercedes González during the event, held in the central courtyard of the Battle of the Salado Quartering, where she explained that “since last week, we have 642 traffic agents in the Community of Madrid, almost 7% more (6.82%) than last December 31, 2022”. Of the 76 newly recruited officers, 63 are civilian guards—46 bikers and 17 attested guards—eight are ropes and five noncommissioned officers.
Mercedes González has been accompanied by the General Director of Traffic, Pere Navarro; the Chief General of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, José Ignacio Criado; the Chief General of the Zone of the Civil Guard in Madrid, José Antonio Berrocal; the Chief Colonel of the Traffic Sector, Benito Monzón; and the Provincial Head of Traffic of Madrid, Cristóbal Cremades.
The Madrid Traffic Sector
Created in 1959 to monitor, regulate, control traffic and improve road safety, the Madrid Traffic Sector currently has 376 vehicles: 180 cars and 196 motorcycles. In addition, it has 23 speed control radars (16 in vehicles and 7 laptops), 390 ethylmeters and 59 drug readers.

Last year, the Civil Traffic Guard carried out 18,928 road patrols in Madrid, traveled 6.52 million kilometers (1.7 million by motorcycle) and provided 9,249 aids, more than 25 each day. Throughout the year, the Traffic Sector recorded 8,445 accidents, in which 70 people died, 167 were seriously injured and 4,007 were slightly injured.
In 2022, the Civil Traffic Guard filed 172,111 complaints, conducted 537,612 alcohol tests (7,244 positive, 1.35%) and 6,045 drug tests (2,072 positive, 34.28%). In addition, last year the number of alcohol tests performed increased by almost 20%, from 436,540 in 2019 to 537,612 in 2022. Likewise, the Civil Guard controlled the speed of 2,082,431 vehicles and imposed 46,377 complaints for excess of it.
