On the occasion of the commemoration on May 8 of the Day of the Victims of Exile, the Government Delegation in La Rioja held this afternoon an act of tribute in which the delegate, Beatriz Arraiz Nalda, and the young María Caballer, representing the Association La Barranca, participated.
As the delegate recalled, the Democratic Memory Law establishes May 8 as the Day of Tribute to the Victims of Exile, “a day of recognition and integral reparation by the State that encourages us to pay tribute and remember the men and women who suffered exile as a result of the Civil War and the Dictatorship in Spain.”
Arraiz Nalda has insisted that “this Spain exiled by imposition is the one we remember today, the one that we now have in mind and that we must never forget”. For this reason, he alluded during his speech to the fact that events such as the one held in La Rosaleda del Espolón should serve to keep in mind that “memory is democracy”.
“The main responsibility of the State in the development of policies of democratic memory is to promote its restorative, inclusive and plural aspect,” he added. On the contrary, he has pointed out that the laws of harmony attempt to hide the truth from the consequences of a war that broke out in two our country, in violation of the legitimate order decided by the Spanish and Spanish.
In this regard, the delegate stressed that “the UN has urged Spain to preserve historical memory in the face of the laws of harmony that are promoted in some autonomous communities. Trying to make invisible the serious human rights violations committed during the Franco regime is an unworthy attempt to limit access to the truth, to whitewash the dictatorship.”
