The delegate of the Government of Spain in La Rioja, Beatriz Arráiz, highlights the support that the Government of Spain and the European Funds provide to the advancement of innovative projects where the development of Riojan talent converges with advances in health research through Artificial Intelligence.
“Tartaglia” – developed by a consortium of companies and research centers among which is the Rioja company Pixelabs – is an innovative project that is part of the PERTE for Avant-Garde Health, a national program that aims to strengthen and transform the health sector, promoting the development in this case, of advanced technologies in health, facilitating connectivity and data security for the benefit of the patient, and at the same time, generating economic value for the region.
Pixelabs leads Tartaglia’s work package that develops predictive models based on neural networks for the automatic screening of diabetic retinopathy, a visual health problem that affects thousands of people. This advance, possible thanks to the funding of 255,000 euros from the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Public Service in the Call for Artificial Intelligence Missions, will significantly improve the early detection of this disease, with a positive impact on the care and quality of life of patients.
During the visit, Raquel Yotti, Commissioner of the PERTE de Salud de Vanguardia, stressed the importance of projects such as Tartaglia to accelerate innovation in the Spanish health system. "The Government of Spain is committed to promoting technological projects in health, which not only advance in the field of clinical care, but also strengthen the technological capabilities of our companies and their competitiveness in the European market," said Yotti.
In addition, the Tartaglia project seeks to ensure security in the exchange of data through a federated network, promoting collaboration between health services in different regions and in connection with European initiatives. In this line, it is envisaged the training of health professionals who can use and improve the capabilities of these artificial intelligence models, ensuring their correct development and applicability in the clinical environment.
Beatriz Arraiz, government delegate in La Rioja, highlighted the value of Next Generation EU Funds in promoting high-impact projects in health and technology in the region: "Initiatives such as Pixelabs reinforce the commitment of the Government of Spain to the economic and technological development of La Rioja, allowing our companies and citizens to benefit from more advanced and accessible healthcare."
Carlos Sangüesa, CEO of Pixelabs, said that “the benefits of AI in the health sector are already unquestionable, but they require a high degree of research and innovation. In this sense, consolidating a Cutting-Edge Health requires the continuous effort of all, and the support of the Administrations is fundamental so that companies such as ours can continue investigating.”
This type of initiative marks a fundamental advance in the commitment of the Government of Spain to health innovation, a priority in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which continues to facilitate investments in cutting-edge technological infrastructure for the benefit of society.
