As part of the Major Project of Common European Interest for New Generation Infrastructure and Cloud Services, the Government of Spain, through the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, funds a project of Arsys for the research and development of advanced cloud computing technologies.
The Government delegate in La Rioja, Beatriz Arraiz Nalda, visited the Arsys data center located in the La Portalada industrial estate in Logroño together with Miguel Martínez Vélez, Chief Product Officer of Arsys, Sara Madariaga, Head of Arsys Lab, and Rafael Toyas, Head of TechOps Data Centers (ES).
This initiative that Arsys is developing has a total budget of more than 10 million euros in its first phase and State aid of 8.4 million euros from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, following the resolution of the call for the ONE IPCEI program, which finances the country's participation in these European projects.
In a first phase, Arsys’ contribution to the IPCEI-CIS includes the design, development and integration of three new solutions that will enable the implementation of the future European multi-cloud-edge infrastructure:
- An open source meta-orchestration platform that will allow interoperability and portability of digital infrastructure services between European technology providers.
- A data analysis system for the different actors of the technological market (integrators, developers, consultants...) to deploy the computing capacity of this platform in their advanced digital applications and services, such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data or macrodata.
- An advanced simulation and monitoring solution based on a digital twin of a data center to optimize the management and operational efficiency of its computing resources.
The financing of this project, together with others from Telefónica, Open Nebula and Corporación Mondragón, is in line with achieving the digital sovereignty and strategic autonomy of the European Union, objective in which this launch of the IPCEI-CIS marks a before and after in cloud computing and on the edge at European level. The funding of the three projects in Spain exceeds 111 million euros.
For her part, the Government delegate stressed that the support of the Arsys project is another step by the Government of Spain in the strengthening of infrastructure capacities in our country to increase the impact of the potential development of advanced data management solutions to increase the competitiveness of European companies. An investment financed through the Next Generation EU Funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
This investment aims to have positive spin-offs across Europe, improving cross-border digital infrastructure connectivity and supporting next-generation infrastructure and services projects in the cloud and edge.
Miguel Martínez Vélez, Chief Product Officer of Arsys, highlighted the importance for Arsys to participate in this European initiative and develop the next European generation of technological solutions. “Innovations that we are launching from Arsys in Logroño and that are also part of the global strategy of the IONOS Group to promote the digital sovereignty of the European Union,” he said.
Arsys, together with the other national participants that have European funds, collaborate in the development of an open-source edge and cloud computing environment that will allow real-time and low-latency services through distributed computing resources.
About IPCEI-CIS
The Major Project of Common European Interest for Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS) is the first IPCEI in the field of cloud and edge computing. It focuses on the development of the first European interoperable and open-access cloud data processing ecosystem to the edge by multiple providers.
The IPCEI-CIS, whose launch was presented by representatives of the European Union in Brussels, plans to mobilize a total of 2.6 billion euros, with 1,200 from public funding. It will develop data processing capabilities, software and data exchange tools that facilitate federated, reliable and energy-efficient distributed data processing technologies in the cloud and on the edge, as well as related services.
The innovation offered by IPCEI CIS will offer a new range of possibilities to European companies and citizens, which will boost the digital and ecological transition in Europe.
