Social Security members linked to tourism activities increased in September by 6.7% compared to the same month of the previous year - 175,541 more members - to 2,789,124. Tourism employment already accounts for 13.4% of the total number of members of the country’s economy, which together grew by 3.7% in that month. In relation to September 2019, a pre-pandemic reference, the growth of tourist employment is 9.7%.
For the acting Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, "the boom in tourism employment, of quality and specialized, is one of the reasons that explain the excellent behavior of the sector during this summer. Increasingly qualified jobs, in line with what the industry demands, that value the professionalism of the staff of one of the world’s leading tourism countries.”
Wage earners increase
In September, the increase in absolute terms was 175,541 new workers in high employment compared to the same month of the previous year. It is a growth that affects all branches of tourism activity and all branches of the sector.
While in the hospitality industry it was 112,863 members (36,088 in accommodation services and 76,775 in food and beverage services), in travel agencies and tour operators it reached 6,244. The rest of the tourist activities also recorded an increase of 56,434 workers.
In September, the number of employees in the tourism sector, which represents 82% of the total number of affiliated workers in that sector, increased by 7.9% compared to the same month of the previous year. Self-employment in tourism, which represents 18% of the total number of affiliated workers, increased by 1.5%.
Baleares, the one that grows the most
In the month of September 2023 the employment in the group of hotels and travel agencies and tour operators increased in all the autonomous communities.
In relative terms, the year-on-year increases in the Balearic Islands (8.5%) and La Rioja (7.9%), Andalusia (7.2%), Galicia (7.2%) and the Canary Islands (7.1%) stand out.
In absolute figures, the largest increases were in Andalusia (22,625 more members), Catalonia (19,071 more members), the Community of Madrid (with 15,368 more), the Balearic Islands (13,086 more), the Valencian Community (12,797 more) and the Canary Islands (10,851 more members).
