The Government Delegation presents the II Award for Master's Thesis on equality and against violence against women
The Coordination Unit against Violence against Women of the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands has presented this Monday the II Award for Master's Degree Final Works (TFM) on equality and against violence against women, which recognizes the research work in this field carried out by universities based in the archipelago. A jury chaired by the Secretary General of the Government Delegation, Ramón Morey, and composed of representatives of the General Administration of the State in the islands and experts from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), the National University of Distance Education (UNED) and the Institut Balear de la Dona (IBDona), have selected the winning work from among the eight that had attended this second call.
The award has been for the work presented by Lucia del Carmen Álvarez Selva, entitled "Seminari de Formació sobre Prostitució al Grau de Història de la UIB", which carried out as TFM of the University Master's Degree in Policies of Equality and Prevention of Gender Violence at the UIB, during the course 22-23.
Álvarez Selva’s research concludes that a change of perspective is necessary in the academic world, which involves, among other aspects, the incorporation of training in equality. The author argues that “it is not realistic to face an entire university journey without counting on the gender perspective” and argues that including the history of women in the story is fundamental to understanding the past and present of humanity.
In this sense, the awarded work reveals that the analysis of prostitution and sexual exploitation counted from the perspective of women allows to identify historical patterns and develop more inclusive and effective approaches to address certain challenges, including the fact that these practices are closely associated with gender inequality, but also poverty and social vulnerability.
The Government delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has presented the award, which consists of a screen print of the Mallorcan painter Carolina Adan Caro, in an event that has taken place at the headquarters of the Delegation, and which has been attended by the rector of the UIB, Jaume Carot, and the director of the UNED, Judit Vega, as well as the Councillor for Families and Social Affairs of the Balearic Government, Catalina Cirer, and the director of the IBDona, Catalina Salom. The members of the jury and those responsible for the State Security Forces and Corps in the Balears have also been present.
Rodríguez Badal stressed that “the fight against gender violence is the responsibility of all and must be addressed from unity and zero tolerance to behaviors that lead to this violence against women. Inequality is also a gateway to abuse, abuse and other forms of gender-based aggression."
Modalities
These distinctions are aimed at people who have done their Master’s Degree Final Project (TFM) in one of these university centers, in person or online, and who through their research work have contributed to improving knowledge about the phenomenon of gender violence and expanding the means to prevent it. The awards are also a recognition of academic studies aimed at making visible situations of equality or inequality between women and men in all its dimensions, and to present proposals or means of intervention to continue moving along this path.
