The Government extends free public transport in the Balears for 2024 with a budget of 43 million euros
The Government of Spain has approved the extension of free public land transport in the Balears during 2024, with a budget of 43 million euros, which will be used to finance the subscriptions and multi-travel titles of the intercity bus and the train in the islands. The Council of Ministers adopted this Tuesday the measure, which is exceptional for the archipelagos of the Balearic and Canary Islands and which has already been applied in 2023, in recognition of the insular fact.
The government delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has described this extension of free public land transport as an “effective and transcendent measure for the daily lives of many citizens of the Balearic Islands”. “This is a firm commitment by the Government of Spain to the islands, which will facilitate the domestic economy of thousands of people in the archipelago and, in turn, will result in an improvement in mobility and environmental protection of the territory,” he stressed.
The grant approved by the Council of Ministers aims to promote the use of public transport in citizen mobility, in a context of high energy and fuel prices. In this regard, the Government has extended the gratuitousness of the State-owned bus lines, as well as the railway services of Cerca, Rodalies and Media Distancia conventional, and a 50% discount on the urban and interurban bus lines of the Peninsula and on the Avant services. With the implementation of these bonuses, there has been a boost in the use of public transport that needs to be consolidated to deepen the use of more sustainable mobility alternatives to the detriment of the private vehicle.
