A total of 814,626 people registered in the Balearic Islands will be able to vote in the local elections that will be held on Sunday, May 28. They are 2.2% more than in the call of May 2019, and include the 37,273 young people who are called to vote for the first time, and who reached their majority after the last elections held, the elections to the Cortes Generales of November 2019.
Of the total number of voters in local elections in the islands, there are 19,141 that correspond to the Census of Foreigners Residing in Spain (CERE) and whose number has decreased by 3,874 people since the elections of 4 years ago. On the contrary, the Electoral Census of Residents (CER) has increased by 2.7% in the same period, and has reached 795,485 people. As for the postal vote, 22,738 applications have been processed, compared to 24,251 received in 2019.
During the election day, 1,849 officers of the Civil Guard, the National Police and local police of the different municipalities will be deployed in the archipelago. In recent weeks, security meetings have been held on each island to organize the security device, with the aim of “ensuring maximum coordination of all parties and making it possible for citizens to exercise their right to vote,” according to the Government delegate in the Balearic Islands, Aina Calvo.
Calvo also highlighted the work carried out during these days prior to the electoral meeting by the official staff of the General Administration of the State in Illes Balears, in coordination with that of other administrations, in preparation for the electoral day of 28M. On the other hand, a total of 741 representatives of the administrations will be distributed among the 381 polling stations from which they will transmit the incidents, if they occur, as well as the provisional data of participation and the scrutiny of the results from the closure. The Government of Spain will offer hearings throughout the day to report on the course of the day, which can be followed through the web enabled by the Ministry of the Interior.
In total, 1,247 polling stations will be formed in Balears on Sunday, which is 32 more than in the 2019 Local Elections. The delegate of the Government thanked the collaboration of the citizens who have been called to participate in some table and who “are essential to ensure the good outcome of the elections.” Aina Calvo stressed that 28M is “a day for citizenship and for citizenship.”
It should be remembered that, according to the Electoral Regime Law, the members designated for the polling stations must go to perform their functions, and they cannot leave or desist without a justified cause and the corresponding notice to be absent. Failure to comply with this obligation may entail criminal liability.
