The Government approves 10 sustainable tourism projects in the Balearic Islands with an investment of more than 34.5 million euros of European funds
The Government, through the Sectoral Tourism Conference, chaired by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, has approved 10 tourism sustainability projects in the Balearic Islands, which will receive for its implementation 34,510,000 euros corresponding to the III Extraordinary Call of the Program of Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destination 2023, financed entirely with the Next Generation EU funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. In total, the autonomous communities will receive an investment of 478 million euros for the financing of 175 tourism sustainability projects, 160 of which will be managed by local entities, while the remaining 15 correspond to cohesion actions (ACD) that will be developed by the autonomous communities and will have a direct impact on destinations.
By type of destination, 255 projects correspond to rural destinations with tourist identity, 69 to tourist destinations of sun and mixed/residential beach, 53 to cities with tourist identity, 18 to urban tourist destinations and the rest to coastal rural destinations (28), natural spaces (36), very internationalized sun and beach destinations (24) and large urban destinations (1).
Of the 10 projects approved in Illes Balears, 5 correspond to tourist destinations of sun and mixed/residential beach, 3 to destinations of sun and beach very internationalized and 1 to rural destinations with tourist identity. In addition, also in accordance with this investment, the region will develop a cohesion action (ACD), which will boost the tourist quality of the destinations.
The Sectoral Conference on Tourism, held this Tuesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, has detailed the projects definitively approved. In the case of the Balearic Islands, the 9 tourism sustainability plans and the ACD.
Felanitx, Mallorca (Town Hall): the plan focuses on the recovery of natural (S'Arenal de Portocolom) and urban spaces (Sa Capella) with heritage and cultural elements of undoubted value, as well as promoting the promotion of the destination and its intelligent management, as well as designing the tourist offer of rural centers to promote seasonalization and promote sustainable, harmonious and balanced development.
Calvià, Mallorca (Town Hall): Actions will be carried out related to the application of environmental criteria in the facilities of the destination through draining pavements, sustainable urban drainage systems, among others; energy saving and digitalization of the management of the municipality for a sustainable development of the area.
Inca, Mallorca (Town Hall): the plan includes actions for the sustainable rehabilitation of the natural environment "Parc Serral de Ses Monges", the adaptation of infrastructures for sustainable urban mobility and cycle tourism, improving energy efficiency or the complete digitalization of the municipal market, among other measures to improve the positioning of the area and attract more visitors.
Muro, Mallorca (Town Hall): the main objective of the plan is the sustainable remodeling of the extensive mature tourist area known as Las Gaviotas, on the maritime front of Platja de Muro. The actions include the control of invasive fauna to restore the ecological balance of humid areas of Platja de Muro; energy efficiency measures; the commitment to the digital infrastructure of the destination or the improvement of accessibility and beautification of public spaces.
Santanyí, Mallorca (Town Hall): the plan includes the actions of adaptation to climate change (elimination of floods through sustainable drains based on draining pavements and the creation of a large reservoir) and a strong commitment to digitization for the sustainable management of resources and consumption, as well as the modernization of the urban environment.
Santa Eulària des Riu, Ibiza (Town Hall): the plan incorporates the actions for the construction of the second phase of the Palau de Congressos to have bigger spaces to attract more MICE events and to be able to host larger cultural events, lengthening the tourist season and increasing the competitiveness of the business fabric.
Raiguer, Mallorca (Mancomunidad): the main objective of the plan is the creation of routes and a cycling infrastructure. This central action is complemented by other complementary actions of sustainable fight against climate change, improvement in the recycling of the destination, digitalization and competitiveness with the creation of the Cycling Raiguer product club, an evaluation of results or the realization of environmental campaigns for sustainability awareness.
Mallorca (Island Council): the main objective of the plan is sustainable tourism and the promotion of innovation to promote the digital transition of the tourism fabric and tourism intelligence. Among the performances are the creation of the Greenway between Palma and Llucmajor, the rehabilitation of the auditorium of the north coast, the creation of new sports facilities or the promotion of an R+D Center for Regenerative Industry in an old shoe factory in the municipality of Inca, among others.
Menorca (Island Council): the plan intervenes in certain points of the island with sanitation plans to avoid waste water discharges and flooding by storm water, restoration of the habitat for fauna and flora and landscape restoration of works and infrastructures, improvement of the lighting system of the tourist areas of Son Blanc, Sa Caleta, Santandria, Cala en Blanes and Cap d'Artrutx, as well as other measures related to digitalization and mobility.
ACD Balearic Islands, Circularity as an axis of sustainable competitiveness in the Balearic Islands: The objective of this project is a comprehensive management of the coast of the Balearic Islands articulated with removable and environmentally friendly infrastructures that allow to offer a service to nautical tourism, carry out information and awareness work while directly protecting the natural heritage, innovate technologically, promote the use of renewable energies and collaborate for scientific purposes.
