The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, requested prudence and responsibility at the wheel in the beginning of the special operation of the General Directorate of Traffic “First of August”, which will begin today, Thursday, at 15:00 hours and will end this Sunday, August 3, at 24:00 hours.
María Rivas reported that 193,000 trips are planned on the roads of Cordoba, 33% of the total of Galicia, which on these days will reach 587,000 in the autonomous community.
The subdelegate stressed the need to extreme driving precautions, in a month of August that records the highest volume of road trips of the whole year. He pointed out that the forecasts of the DGT point to 1,586,000 on the roads of the province, out of a total of 4,838,000 in the whole of Galicia.
Rivas appealed to individual responsibility at the wheel to avoid accidents at this time. “Road safety does not depend only on the technical and human resources we make available to citizens. The individual responsibility of the driver is also fundamental. Therefore, I want to call for prudence, strict respect for traffic rules, and to avoid any distraction or excess at the wheel,” he said, emphasizing that “every decision at the wheel can save lives.”
Operation August First
With regard to the Operation that begins today, at 3:00 p.m., the main difficulty will be in the entrance and exit of the large urban centers. It also coincides that in this period from Thursday to Sunday the displacements of those who go on holiday in the month of August are added with those who return from their summer rest in July.
Also for tomorrow, Friday, August 1st, a great intensity in the circulation is expected. The most conflicting hours will occur between 14:00 and 23:00 hours, so, as far as possible, it is advisable to avoid that time slot. Likewise, on Saturday, August 2, it is expected that there will be traffic intensity between 18:00 and 22:00 hours, and on Sunday, August 3, between 18:00 and 23:00 hours.
The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña highlighted the availability of resources from the General Directorate of Traffic, with the deployment of 180 agents on the roads, personnel of the Management Centers responsible for the maintenance of equipment and the installation of measures on the roads. María Rivas thanked the effort and work that all the DGT teams do “in order to guarantee safety and optimize the roads”.
For this operation throughout Galicia, 359 surveillance cameras and 409 data collection stations are active, sensors that, among other things, measure the distances between vehicles and the occupation of the road. In addition, there are also 572 variable message boards in operation that broadcast messages in real time on retentions, show recommendations and other aspects to take into account for safe driving. To these resources are added aerial means with a helicopter and the use of drones.
