The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, presented on Tuesday in the place of Olveiroa, in Dumbría, the campaign "No caminas sola", an initiative to reinforce the protection of women who travel the Camino de Santiago. Along with the deputy delegate was the mayor, Raúl González Lado, and members of the State Security forces and bodies such as the Colonel Chief of the Command of the Civil Guard of A Coruña, Fernando Pedreira; the Provincial Chief Commissioner of the National Police, Carlos Gómez Rodríguez, and the president of the College of Pharmacists of the province of A Coruña, Sara Catrain González.
This campaign is promoted by the Coordination Units against Violence against Women of the Delegations of the Government of Galicia, Aragón, Navarra, Lana Rioja, Castilla y León and Extremadura.
In the province of A Coruña, the campaign results in the distribution of 763 posters and 15,260 information cards, written in Galician, Spanish and English, which are placed in 149 shelters, 81 health centers, 49 tourist offices, 410 pharmacies, 12 hospitals, 5 police stations, 27 posts of the Civil Guard and 30 of the Local Police. These materials include contact phones, encourage you to download the AlertCorps app, a tool that connects directly with the security forces, and a QR code that allows access to the website of the Government Delegation against Gender Violence in which there is information and resources against gender violence as well as other forms of violence against women.
During the event, it was highlighted that 1,080 people traveled the Fisterra-Muxía Way so far this year, 9% more than in the same period of the previous year, of which 54% were women. Likewise, 46% of pilgrims were foreigners, which shows the international scope of the route.
The subdelegate highlighted the feminist and egalitarian character of the Government of Spain, which moves to this coordinated action between six Delegations that began in 2021 and that has 763 active points of attention along all the Xacobe routes in the province of A Coruña. “Equality and security policies are not improvised: they require planning, investment and political will. And we will continue to work so that the Camino remains a safe space, also for those who travel alone,” he said, adding that “every step on the Camino is also an expensive step towards a fairer, more egalitarian and safer society.”
Finally, Rivas thanked the exemplary role of the State security forces and bodies and wanted to highlight, in particular, the valuable collaboration of pharmacies and shelters, which serve as strategic points of distribution and support throughout the territory. He also stressed their role as reference and reception places for pilgrims, contributing decisively to their safety and well-being along the way. He also had words of recognition for the involvement of the City of Dumbría.
