The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, has today pointed to the stability in the figures of fatal accidents and deaths on the roads of Galicia last year, when 89 deaths were recorded in traffic accidents, one more than the previous year. The delegate stressed that this result occurs in a complex context, in which the mobility recorded on Galician roads and the number of driving people have increased and also in which there is a progressive aging of the mobile park, which causes “that 7 out of 10 fatal traffic accidents last year had occurred in vehicles of more than 10 years”. He detailed this before chairing the meeting of the Autonomous Traffic and Road Safety Commission of Galicia, which was held this morning in the Government Delegation.
In this context, the delegate added the commitment of the Government, through the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, to the conservation and improvement of the road network of state competition in Galicia. This commitment to infrastructure was reflected in 2024 in the 46% increase in investments in roads in Galicia, to exceed 255 million euros, and with six out of ten euros destined for improvement works.
With respect to the road accident balance of last year, Pedro Blanco detailed that the provinces of Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra recorded fewer victims while, on the contrary, A Coruña increased its figures by 46%. This increase is changing in the year 2025, it advanced, with a decrease of 25% among people killed by traffic accidents in Galicia.
The delegate drew attention to the increase in deaths among the group of motorcyclists, with 25 deaths in 2024, ten more than the previous year. This trend, he indicated, led this year to an increase in surveillance and awareness tasks aimed at this group of drivers, such as the special campaign developed in Galicia in mid-May or the increase in surveillance during the weekends that the DGT has just announced nationally.
Pedro Blanco concluded by highlighting the “collaboration with which all the administrations involved in road safety work to make our roads increasingly safe”.

Together with the accident balance sheet, the meeting reviewed other issues related to road safety. Among them, the increase in incidents related to vehicles in the opposite direction, which rose by 30% last year, and the incidents caused by atrocities of wild animals, which also rose by 11% in Galicia, were addressed.
In both aspects, two teams composed of representatives of the administrations and the security forces are working to analyze the casuistry of both groups of accidents and evaluate technical solutions that can be implemented in the rest of the road network.
In today’s committee also participated the head of the DGT in Galicia, Victoria Gómez; the head of the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard of Galicia, Antonio Hidalgo; the director of the Traffic Management Center of the Northwest, Bruno Deschamps; the head of the Road Demarcation in Galicia, Ángel González; the director of the Galician Infrastructure Agency, Francisco Menéndez, and other heads of state, regional, provincial and local bodies.
