The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, trusted that “sooner than later” the Mostra do Encaixe de Camariñas will be declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest. He did so at the opening of the 34th edition of this fair, in which he conveyed “the recognition of the Government to the work you do to immerse these days Camariñas and the entire Costa da Morte in a sea of piques”, as the motto of this edition says.
María Rivas, who was accompanied by the president of the Provincial Council of A Coruña, Valentín González Formoso, and the mayor of Camariñas, Sandra Insua, took advantage of her speech to reclaim the role developed by the women palilleras, “who stitch by stitch achieved that the name of Camariñas reaches the whole world, and that the quality of their lace is recognized in prestigious fashion shows, such as that of New York”.
The subdelegate reviewed the values and history of a tradition with more than 600 years in which the lace left the privacy of the home to become coveted pieces by the great fashion firms. In this sense, he stressed that to talk about lace “is to do it with craftsmanship and tradition, and we Galicians and Galicians also know a lot about that,” said Rivas, who gave as an example the samples of pottery and goldsmithing that, along with other disciplines, can be seen in this fair, for which more than 20,000 people are expected to pass in the next few days, until April 20.
María Rivas also indicated that the history of progress and well-being of Camariñas was woven with patience and with thread from the hand of an exhibition that in this edition turns 34 years old and that is already consolidated as a reference of Galician craftsmanship inside and outside our borders.
However, the subdelegate appealed to the new people to continue with this tradition and you are attributing yourself for new business opportunities in lace, both at the textile level and even in decoration, to guarantee the continuity in time of a knowledge that kept alive during all these years “talented, strong and empowered women of the Costa da Morte”.
María Rivas encouraged the mayor to “palillar Concello and Government, as do the women of Camariñas” so that, sooner rather than later, the Mostra do Encaixe de Camariñas “has the recognition it deserves”. He also had some words of encouragement “to those young people who from tradition are opening new business opportunities in lace, both in textile and even in decoration, and who guarantee the survival of the same”. He thanked the efforts of those who work to transfer this art to the new generations: “We want to continue doing so, with this exhibition, with the museum, with associations such as Rendas, with the municipal schools in which girls and boys take over and perpetuate history and tradition, the value of the people.”
