The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, highlighted in Ortigueira the more than 2.5 million euros invested by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) in the protection of 9 dune spaces in the province. He did so during a visit to the beach of Morouzos, where he supervised, together with the mayor, Valentín Calvín, and the head of the Demarcation behind his back, Carlos Gil, the progress of the work carried out by the Government in this town.
Specifically, the subdelegate verified the work of delimitation of the transit areas, which will allow to avoid pedestrian access to the sandy area through the sand dune areas and thus reverse the deterioration of the vegetation cover. “These works are part of an action of the Ministry to combat erosion on the coast of A Coruña and, at the same time, increase its resilience to the effects of climate change,” said the subdelegate, who stressed the importance of conserving ecosystems “to continue enjoying arenales as beautiful as this one in Morouzos.”
The works executed by Costas consist of the execution of a wooden footbridge from the soccer field to the beach, which will be flanked by piles and rope on its sides. In the central part, it will act on a section in poor condition of the existing walkway that will be replaced by an elevated one and will also limit with pile and rope the path that goes parallel to the beach from the central area to the west.
In addition to that of Morouzos, the plan includes actions in the dunar ecosystems of Vilarrube (Valdoviño), San Xurxo (Ferrol), Baldaio (Carballo), Soesto and Traba (Laxe), Nemiña (Muxía), Xuño (Porto do Son) and Carnota, which will allow to restore 33.9 Km of degraded areas and ecosystems of the coast of A Coruña. The overall budget amounts to 2,558,652.90 euros and all works are expected to be executed during 2025.
Restoration of the marshes of Mera
On the other hand, María Rivas took advantage of the visit to point out that the Government is also working on a project in Ortigueira for the recovery of the marshes of Mera that was included as a proposal for priority action of the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea within the LIFE Project of wet areas of the European Union.
The objective of this project, which includes an investment of approximately 6 million euros, is to act on 600,000 square meters of marsh, removing constructions such as dams, gates or knives; eliminating exotic and invasive plants and restoring the natural hydraulic regime. The performance also includes the adaptation of a natural path of 1,220 meters in length and 3 meters in width at the northern end of the same and the placement of interpretative panels.
“These actions are called to improve the environmental quality of the ecosystems of Ortigueira, a territory with an immense natural heritage that we must preserve so that the next generations can also continue to enjoy it,” concluded Rivas.
