The Government’s deputy delegate in Ourense, Eladio Santos, attended today, on the eve of International Tree Day, the presentation of the new in vitro cultivation laboratory of the Tragsa Group, located in the Maceda Nursery. It is a state-of-the-art facility, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, which, as explained by its managers, represents an important milestone in its commitment to innovation and scientific advancement in the field of forest reproductive materials.
It is a fundamental tool not only to repopulate with the highest quality plant, but also to maintain the native plant species, more resistant and better adapted to the ecosystems.
In this presentation, the deputy delegate was accompanied by the mayor of Maceda, Uxía Oviedo; the head of the Northwest Territorial Unit of Tragsa, Manuel Villarroel; the coordinator of the Viveiro de Maceda, Rosario Martel Muñoz; and other authorities. All of them took a tour of the facilities of the Maceda Nursery to get to know first-hand the capabilities of this new laboratory.
Eladio Santos valued “the permanent innovation” of these facilities for the selection of tree species, such as chestnut, oak, cork oak and coniferous, which will be distributed throughout Spain. “Its aim is to innovate in order to improve species, fighting against diseases and fungi, and against the damage caused in some of them by climate change. It’s a ground-breaking project,” he said.
In fact, the Tragsa Group hopes that this project will allow the work of public research centers to be transferred to the agroforestry sector, in a precise way so that it has an impact in the medium and long term.
A bet that, according to the subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, “is a pride for Maceda and for the province. This initiative provides jobs, fixes population in the region and dynamizes it economically since this company collaborates with others in the area in terms of maintenance and repair,” he concluded.
