The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, claimed this 8M the role of women in the historical process of the Spanish Transition, which is the best example that “when women advance, society advances and democracy advances”. This was how it was pronounced this morning at the closing of the commemorative act of 8M held in the Government Delegation and that united in the same celebration the double commemoration that is given this year of the 50th Anniversary of “Spain in freedom” and the proclamation of 8 March by the UN as International Women’s Day.
In his speech, Pedro Blanco highlighted the path traveled by women and the feminist movement for the last 50 years in Spain. One way, said the delegate, in which they had to face a double struggle: the one that aimed to place their claims in the political debate to change the laws and the penal code and the one that wanted to overturn the customs inherited from a patriarchal society that Franco’s government had been responsible for strengthening.
The delegate noted that the advances in equality achieved in these years make this historic stage “the most revolutionary for women in all history” and “gives us encouragement to advance this Government’s commitment to the advancement of rights, equality and the empowerment of women.”
“We are convinced, and reality shows us, that public equality policies are an instrument to improve not only the lives of women, but that of all citizens,” he added.
Pedro Blanco recalled that this 2025 also reaches 50 years in which women have the right to vote in Spain, adding the two historical periods in which they held this right. This fact, for the delegate, “shows them the harshness of the way to achieve the rights and the requirement that we all have to take care of them and to enrich them”.
In this line, he insisted on the relevance of the claims and of the commemorative and awareness events around dates such as 8M, to combat the involutionist positions that “want to return us to the worst of the past”.
