The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, defended today in Taboada the need to raise awareness and train the population in gender equality, especially youth, to prevent and detect all forms of gender violence and eradicate machismo. This was affirmed in the act of handing over to the mayor of Taboada “MAVI, the travelling suitcase against gender violence”, a program promoted by the Subdelegation and that allows citizens to have access to printed materials of different formats that deal with equality and feminism.
The subdelegate presented this program with the Mayor of Taboada, Roi Rigueira; the Councilor for Equality, Patricia María Conde and the Head of the Unit against Gender Violence of the Subdelegation, Mª Luisa Castro. At the event, Isabel Rodríguez thanked the Local Government for collaborating to materialize this activity, which will take place in Taboada at the Institute of Secondary Education. He highlighted the municipalist nature of this initiative carried out by the Government’s Subdelegation, stressing the important role played by municipalities so that this type of campaign reaches the majority of the population, and especially the population of rural areas that have more difficulty in accessing materials of this nature.
Anti-machismo materials
The travelling suitcase MAVI gathers twelve books, aimed at all kinds of audiences, and includes a diary where the people who participate can express their reflections and opinions on the books and the experiences they had through reading.
Isabel Rodríguez recalled that in the fight against this type of violence, education and the promotion of reading are indispensable. “That is why we are moving through the province these readings that address topics that favor critical thinking and the adoption of an attitude of revulsion against machista and discriminatory behaviors, as well as the perpetuation of stereotypes and gender roles.”
The subdelegate welcomed the good reception that the program has in the province, and recalled that, in recent months, MAVI has already visited libraries, social and educational centers of municipalities such as Burela, Meira, Monforte, Vilalba or Sarria and also visited the penitentiary centers of Bonxe and Monterroso.
