The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, today made a public recognition to the human team that is part of the Traffic Management Center (CGT) of the Northwest-Cantabrian and that has managed since its creation to be “a reference of Galician society and of all the institutions and people who fight for road safety”. Pedro Blanco thanked the work of the 58 men and women who operate both in the facilities of the CGT located in A Coruña and in the maintenance of technological equipment located on the roads and who support its management: “Professionals who are waiting 24 hours a day on our roads so that we have to follow the rules to reach our destination.”
The government delegate went today to the CGT facilities, located in A Coruña, to supervise the result of the works of remodeling of this center, to make them more operational, broad and better adapted to the needs of road management. There he was accompanied by the deputy director general of Mobility and Technology of the DGT, Francisco José Ruiz; the deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas; the provincial head of Traffic of A Coruña, Victoria Gómez; the superior head of Police of Galicia, Pedro Pacheco and the head of the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard of Galicia, Antonio Hidalgo. During the visit they were guided by the current director of the CGT, Ramiro Martínez.
An innovative center and pointer
The Northwest-Cantabrian CGT began operating in March 2002 and, in 2020, extended its management scope to the current one, which includes Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria and the accesses to Galicia from the community of Castilla y León.
Its activity, which is carried out continuously, is supported by a set of technological elements distributed in the State Road Network: 360 television cameras, 490 variable information panels, 1,365 ground beacons; 70 weather stations and 1,400 traffic control points offering information on vehicle type, intensity and speed in 940 road sections.
In addition, the automated crossing of the upper Fiouco is managed from these facilities, in the A8, where 372 vehicle crossing detection beacons are distributed. This experience is being implemented by the DGT in other parts of Spain affected by similar weather conditions and places the center of A Coruña among the leading centers nationwide in traffic management technologies.
Road Safety Merit Medals
During today’s event, two medals were awarded to the Merit of Road Safety (in the category of bronze with blue badge), awarded by the Ministry of the Interior. These awards were given to retired official José López, who spent more than 50 years in traffic management centers, and to the current director of the CGT, Ramiro Martínez, who will leave this position later this week when he reaches retirement age.
