The deputy delegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, congratulated the managers in Spain of the Chinese company Sungrow, which is going to start the first warehouse in Galicia of electricity with batteries in the polygon of Nantes (Sanxenxo), thanks to the contribution of the Government of Spain of 1.6 million euros through the PERTE of Renewable Energies, green hydrogen and storage. The project, in which 6.5 million euros will be invested, will produce 20 MW/hour, enough to supply electricity to around 2,500 homes.
Daniel Sánchez, CIELO de Sungrow for Spain and Portugal, and José Ramón Rivas, responsible for Project Development, approached the Government Subdelegation and announced that the warehouse will be ready to go into service around next August and once all the environmental procedures have been completed, since they are about to receive the municipal license. The facilities have a strategic location, on an industrial plot located a few meters from an electrical substation.
The project, officially called “Bess Sanxenxo”, is the first battery storage in all of Galicia and also one of the first in Spain and is possible thanks to the contribution of the Government, which charges 24% of the investment. In the call for this PERTE another project was also approved in Lugo, with a different format and intended for the storage of the heat network. Throughout Spain, 35 battery storage projects were benefited.
The warehouse will be located on a plot of 3,101 square meters and will have four modules preinstalled in special containers, based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology, in the “stand-alone” mode. Each container is composed of 6 racks, which in turn contain 8 battery modules and 6 solar or wind direct current inverters, the alternating current, that of the electrical distribution.
Abel Losada applauded the “intelligence and pioneering nature of this business venture aimed at competing, under increasingly favorable conditions, with combined gas cycle plants”. He stressed that this type of warehouse is a second step in the deployment of renewable energies in Spain, allowing to balance the energy power of the network to meet demand at a time when energy production decreases the cause of weather conditions. “This stabilization of the purchase has several positive effects, firstly on the average price of energy, with which consumers benefit, and secondly, on the investment and production strategies of the companies themselves,” explained the subdelegate, who also highlighted the nature of the initiative, “which represents exactly the spirit of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain, because it is a transforming step for the energy system in the direction of renewables.”
Who is Sungrow Power?
Sungrow Power is a leading multinational in the solar energy sector, with headquarters in Hefei (China) and a turnover close to 10 billion euros in 2023. In Spain, it operates through Sociedad Soner Sorolla, controlled by the holding company Sungrow Renewable Energy Spain, based in Madrid, and belonging to a company established in Singapore.
This multinational is specialized in the manufacture of transformers that convert solar energy from direct current to alternating current that use most electrical networks. From this technology, which it installed in 170 countries to reach 515 GW, it obtains the bulk of its revenue, although it also produces charging systems for electric vehicles, green hydrogen production or floating photovoltaic plants.
Founded in 1997 by Professor Cao Renxian, Sungrow was consolidated as one of the main global players in the renewable energy sector. Bloomberg noted that, in 2024, it became the most valuable company in the world in its sector, with a market capitalization of 19.4 billion euros, comparable to that of large companies such as Endesa or Repsol and superior to that of 23 IBEX companies.
