The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, ratified today the commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to “continue improving the living conditions of workers in Galicia together with social agents”. He did so today in A Coruña during the act of tribute to the historical leader of the UGT Pepe Carrillo, who held the position of regional secretary of this union between 1992 and 2020.
In his speech, the delegate reviewed the measures approved by the Government since the pandemic to consolidate rights and create the social shield in Spain. Measures that began in the pandemic itself, with the ERTES that allowed jobs to be maintained, and that continued with the approval of the Labor Reform, paid leave and consecutive increases in the Interprofessional Minimum Wage and that will now add a new advance with the reduction of the working day.
Pedro Blanco cited these measures as “examples of a form of government that we are not going to renounce” that defends that “economic progress sees hand in hand with the extension of rights,” and that reaffirms the idea that “we must not renounce to improve working and salary conditions to promote the economic progress of a country.” This way of governing, he said, is a model of success that is being copied by countries in the environment by combining rights with the improvement of business competitiveness.
Pepe Carrillo: a generous and dialoguing man
The government delegate made a tour of the qualities that stand out from Pepe Carrillo’s career as a trade unionist, of which he pointed out “his generosity, the search for dialogue over confrontation and commitment with the workers of this region.”
This commitment to labor rights, Pedro Blanco added the deep concern of the leader of UGT for the industrial future of the region of A Coruña, who lived at first hand in his passage through the Arms Factory, “always thinking of future generations, dedicating a very important part of his union work to claim that new industrial projects had come to occupy the space of those who ceased in their environment.”
The event, which was held at the A Coruña Trade Union Building, was attended by the Government’s deputy delegate in A Coruña, María Rivas.
