The Subdelegation of the Government in A Coruña, with the help of the subdelegate, María Rivas, and the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office advanced today in the coordination between both institutions to improve the prevention, investigation and treatment of women victims of trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation in the province.
It was in a meeting held this morning at the headquarters of the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, in the former Tobacco Factory of A Coruña, in which the subdelegate participated together with the prosecutor delegate of Trafficking in Persons and Foreigners of A Coruña, Santiago Aba. The meeting was attended by representatives of the National Police and the Civil Guard and was attended by the head of the Coordination Unit against Gender Violence of the Government Delegation, María Debén and the head of the Violence against Women Unit of the Government Subdelegation in A Coruña, Manuela Vilaboy.
María Rivas recalled the commitment of the Government in the fight against trafficking in women and girls for the purpose of sexual exploitation and, above all, with the protection of victims. She stressed the importance of working on prevention, with campaigns such as the one promoted last year by the Government Subdelegation in collaboration with different organizations in the province coinciding with the commemoration, on 23 September, of the International Day against the Exploitation of Women and Trafficking in Children.
At the police level, the subdelegate detailed that the latest available data from the Ministry of the Interior reveal that, in 2023, the National Police and Civil Guard carried out 95 inspections in places where prostitution was practised and similar points in Galicia. The inspections identified 430 people at risk and 19 women who were being sexually exploited. The work of the Security Forces and Corps allowed the arrest of the 7 people in Galicia accused of crimes related to the exploitation and trafficking of women.
