On December 6, Constitution Day, Eladio Santos, deputy delegate of the Government in Ourense, praised the Magna Carta “that compromises in the essentials.” He expressed this during the act of commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, organized by the Government Subdelegation and held this morning in the Municipal Auditorium of Ourense, with the musical interpretation of the Cultural Bank of Barbadás, under the direction of Celso Nieto Rodríguez.
During his speech, Eladio Santos recalled that the Constitution “is like a minimal agreement, written among all the individuals of a people, to make sure that no one makes the decisions for us. The Constitution protects them from tyranny.”
In addition, he emphasized the concept of equality, which is already present in the first constitutions of history. “It’s a breakthrough idea, it’s the engine of change: all individuals are equal, with equal opportunities and equal rights. An ambition that would change the world. It changed people’s way of thinking, their ambitions, their projects, the way they relate. Equality is dignity,” he recalled.
Awards and recognitions
During the ceremony, the prizes of the 40th edition of the Spanish Constitution Contest organized by the Subdelegation of the Government in Ourense were awarded to 20 students of the province for their drawings, photographs and videos, focused on Article 47 of the Constitution: “All Spaniards have the right to enjoy decent and suitable housing.”
Ten prizes were awarded in the category of Early Childhood Education, Primary and Special Education, which received a gift and a copy of the Spanish Constitution; and 10 in the category of Compulsory Secondary Education, Baccalaureate, Medium Vocational Training Cycles and the University. These students were awarded with a cultural and technological bonus. The subdelegate of the Government thanked all the schools and institutes for their participation, and pointed them out as “the real protagonists of this act”.
In addition, he recalled the close link of the Constitution with today’s society, “in these times of tension, better collaboration and coordination; in the face of lies, the right to truthful information; in the face of ignorance, the right to education; in the face of manipulation, science; and in the face of speculation, the right to housing, yes, housing as a right,” he stressed.
For its part, the recognitions in this 46th anniversary of the Constitution were awarded to AODEMPER, for attending to the needs of people with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's and rare diseases and their families, improving their quality of life; POR ELES TEA OURENSE, for fighting in the search for the full social integration of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder; and Francisco Nóvoa Rodríguez, for his extensive contribution to the training, culture and social activity of Ourense throughout more than half a century of professional trajectory.
