As part of the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Government Subdelegation in Lugo reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Spain to eradicate all forms of male violence. This was manifested in the reading of the institutional declaration, placing this question of State as the crudest expression of inequality and power relations between men and women.
In the province of Lugo, the data of the VioXén system reflect the persistence of this structural problem: 796 active cases involving 773 victims, of which 64.6% are Spanish and 35.4% foreign. As for the aggressors, 182 of the 780 registered are persistent, with more than one victim, and of them, 138 are of Spanish nationality. In addition, it is noted that 768 cases have active protection orders, while the COMETA and ATENPRO devices are in operation in 49 and 32 cases respectively.
With 1,286 women murdered since 2003 due to gender violence in Spain, the Subdelegation urged to redouble efforts from all areas: “Shame cannot be on the side of the victims, but on the side of the aggressors and those who look the other way. We must continue to work together for a society free of violence against women and girls.” In this sense, the violence “that struck our province this weekend, with two machista aggressions in Lugo and Vilalba” was explicitly condemned.
Not long after the event, it was also recalled that the State Pact against Gender Violence, approved in 2017, allowed the implementation of various measures to strengthen the care of victims throughout the territory. Not last year, the municipalities of Lugo received more than 240,000 euros to improve services and resources #available.
“Eradicating violence against women is a duty of the whole of society, because despite legislative advances and the increase in the economic, social or psychological coverage of victims, much remains to be done.”
The event culminated in a minute of silence in memory of the women victims of male violence and a call to renew the collective, political and social commitment to achieve a more just and egalitarian society.
